It is a shame that FF4J has given grown-up men impersonating super-heroes such a bas rep.

THOR is gonna go nuts when he sees that abstract.

Yep. Reckon the Hulk'll shit a brick too.

Oh My God! I hadn't even considered that.

It's an odd one, isn't it?

It seems fairly harmless to me for these fellows to begin a 'lets all change our suit-names to Avengers on the same day!' themed-thread, and invite others to join them. The error in judgement they made was to post it in Comics, and without an abstract. In their defence, one might argue that it would be largely Comics stalwarts who would find this fun, and that an abstract reading 'pretend you're one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes by, um, altering what you're called on screen!' would have rather spoiled the impact of the thread. Then again, if Comics is supposed to be a cut above the usual Millarworld / Byrne Robotics tosh, this sort of thing might set a rather depressing precedent. Perhaps best in the Convo.

The unnamed Mod's decision to move the thread seems reasonable, then. The new abstract, though, seems increasingly mean-spirited, and as XK pointed out, unnecessarily eye-stabby for anybody who has been at the sharp end of custody struggles. (My personal take on this is that while I've been at the very sharp end of this as a kid, I still found the abstract fairly amusing, although not amusing enough to discount the feelings of XK when she made them known). So on the one hand we have a group of posters who didn't quite play things quite by the book, but whose intention was benign, and on the other a mod (and those who ok'd the modding action) who played things absolutely by the book, but in a manner that squashed some harmless fun, and offended the sensibilities of at least one much valued member of Barbelith.

Until the mod in question identifies themselves and tells their side of this sorry tale, I guess the lesson we've all learned is that the next time we want to get a group of fellow board members together and simultaneously change our names to those of a super-team, we should:

A) Do it in Convo.
B) Write an abstract
C) Choose a super-team that hasn't been co-opted by an unpleasant collection of men from failed relationships, lest a mod makes with the mockery/eyestabbiness. Might I suggest the Inhumans, or the WildC.A.T.S? The Great British Public hasn't got a fucking clue who they are.

Good luck in 28 days, Avenger-chaps!

That's an issue never addressed in the comics: Are Hulk's, shal we say, "left-overs" Gamma-active? If so, there must be some huge bright-green bugs wandering about in the Nevada desert.

I agree that the abstract should be changed. How about "a safe space for people who start threads in the wrong forum and leave the topic abstract blank to identify themselves"?

Or just super-power issues?

More seriously: given that I OK'd the change, I do apologise to XK and anyone else who experienced genuine discomfort at the FF4J references. (Except Iron Man.)

GM:
So on the one hand we have a group of posters who didn't quite play things quite by the book, but whose intention was benign,

I'n not sure the intention was benign to be honest, I think it was some 'fun' that would hopefully develop into a comic hero related thread full off insites into peoples relationships with the characters etc etc etc yadda yadda yadda. I seem to rememeber a Batman versus Wolverine thread in the Comics forum that was actually quite a 'fun' success.

and on the other a mod (and those who ok'd the modding action) who played things absolutely by the book, but in a manner that squashed some harmless fun, and offended the sensibilities of at least one much valued member of Barbelith.

Which book is that then? Seems like a few pages might have been missing.

Fucking hell. I appreciate this thread might have irked you, but as someone who's been here for years, and is most definitely not a troll, but I'm beginning to get very fucking sick of being associated with this group, and with troublesome and misogynistic trolls of past inglories.

Change the abstract.

Stop associating me with a group I have moral issues with.

Lighten the fuck up.

Aunt Beast must be joking around with the 'except iron man' stuff. Aren't you, Aunt? TBH, i think iron man, etc deserve a direct apology just as much as XK. It would be easy, glancing at the thread, to assume the boys were engaging in a rather tasteless, potentially offensive joke, when they're simply engaging in a slightly geeky, vaguely trollish, but ultimately harmless one. Changing the abstract was really uncool and, lke XK, I think it was unnecessary and very mean spirited. This is barbelith; F4J go down like a ton of bricks here. Whoever concocted the abstract knows that.

Yes, I'm joking. I'm sorry for clicking the "yes" button and thereby allowing Iron Man to be associated with a bunch of wankers in Spandex, and possibly Shadowsax. No-one deserves to be associated with Shaowsax, except possibly Paranoid Writer.

Like I said in the Policy topic though I'd have been much more apologetic if not for the tone of I.M.'s response.

IM's response was of direct result of your action. I think he was fairly restrained considering the tasteless & offensive association you seemed to find so hillarious.

that's because the Mods are more worried about justifying their attitude by saying "It was just a joke", all the while dismissing the feelings of those who were offended and trolled-upon.

Which I find sadly ironic.

Edmund
22:37 / 17.10.07
and totally spineless. To be fair to AB, at least ve's taken some responsibility, even if the justification is pretty lame & the apology a little half hearted.

Megsie, the only mod justifying the action is me. If you cast your limpid gaze to the top of this forum, do you see my suit in the list of people with mod powers? Why no, you don't. Believe me, if I could have put in for a change I would have done it already. I've done the next best thing and put a request in the relevant policy thread.

Thanks, though--you've just given me the opportunity to do something I've been wanting to do since you joined the board and tell you to SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Well, I won't. You fucked up real big this time, and byu being so defensive you are only making it worse. I used the term "moderators" in a impersonal matter just to show some debate politeness, but yes! you guessed! I am talking about you (duh!)

Some humility for a change would do you good at this moment.

DM, you really need to get off AB's back a little, whilst I think it's fair enough to comment on the personal belief of misuse of power you seem to be sparring for a fight. This is something THE EVENGERS won't tollerate so DO ONE.

Once again, Megsie, I have no power to edit the summary so your criticism makes little sense.

Here's a thought: Maybe someone who actually does have the power to change the summary could request the edit? Iron Man, since this is your thread you should see an "edit topic" button at the bottom of the page. Click it and edit the summary to something you'd prefer.

Shut up, Dead Megatron.

This is just Brighton Posse team bonding, isn't it? Just like this one? As such, I don't really see any reason at the extent to which people have got their dudge on - F4J pretend to be superheroes and seek attention, and that's what the BP were up to here. Still, the abstract has been changed now, so happy ending.

And still no word from the mysterious FFJ LOL-O-RAMA! Mod... Does anyone here know hir identity (AB, given that you have claimed to have ok'd the abstract upthread, at least you should be aware of who ze is)? And if so, is there any good reason why you couldn't let the board know who ze was? We know that Papers - quite reasonably - made the move to switch the thread to Convo, but who is that masked person who decided that invoking a bunch of misogynistic twats, and upsetting at least one valued 'lither, in the modded-in abstract was such a great idea?

I'm left with the feeling that A) I want to change my name to Triathlon (surely the most obscure and unpopular Avenger in Marvel's history, which would surely be appropriate) and B) that the mystery Mod should step forward, if indeed those who are aware of hir identity feel unwilling or unable to disclose hir name.

NEWSFLASH: Abstract seems to have been changed, which is good, but that still leaves us no nearer to knowing who the FFJ TRICKSTA MOD was... Dude / Dudette, will you do the decent thing?
