Reading The Jigsaw Man - Paul Britton - about forensic psych. Interesting and scary and probably a bit pop. What does anyone think about offender profiling and so on?

Overrated in terms of accuracy but a useful adjunct to standard forensic investigation.

The issue to me is that here is a technology which doesn't rely on a crime having been committed to produce a list of suspects. You could abstract a profile of a person likely to commit a string of serious sex offences, for example, and see whether it matched anyone who had a string of minor offences but no major convictions...

A gross violation of civil liberties.

But on the other hand, it could save both potential victim and potential offender from a world of hurt.

I'm not seriously advocating it. But I'm intrigued and frightened by the notion.
