I always thought he was genuine. Sadly, the world is full of folks like this. Donna Kossey's book on the subject Kooks was a disturbing read. Which I will now disturbingly re-read, once I've got the Christmas backlog out of the way (off topic - the Jack Parsons bio is top of the pile).

Some of the stuff gets genuinely nasty after a while; one almost hopes he was/is just a maniac rather than someone with particularly crappy sense of humour.
