I wanted to be Merlyn from The Sword in the Stone. I subsequently went through wanting to be a novelist, academic, poet, academic again. However, I have recently realised that my original idea was the right one all along and I am therefore doing my best to attain this ideal. If anyone can tell me where I can buy an owl I shall be mightily obliged.

One thing I can really clearly remember wanting to be was a marine biologist...it was my stock response to 'what do you want to do when you grow up?' from the ages of five to twelve. I think I was a fan of the idea of doing lots of scuba diving, because I have never been particularly interested in marine life.

I wanted to be a milliner, until I realised how pish poor my sewing is. Certainly not good enough to make up a pattern to fit something vaguely round.

The other two were a gymnast and a hippy.
