I've booked tomorrow off for purposes of mental health. I'm losing that shift's money, obviously, but at this point the badly depleted sanity box is more important. And I'll be going to an opthamologist as well, to get an updated prescription for some glasses, seeing as how (or, at this point, squinting as how) I haven't had fresh glass in ten years. Seems weird to be posting this in a Happy thread, as it's a follow-on from a post I made in the Miserable one, but...

...one of my old school friends was killed in an accident a couple of weeks back. And I just went to his memorial service. The service itself was... well, it was LONG. We were late- like, an HOUR late, and it still went on for another 90 minutes. But at the pub afterwards, I met up with a whole bunch of people I haven't seen in nearly twenty years, including the guy who was my best mate from the age of six right up until leaving home at 18.

As I say, it feels weird that this was such a happy-making day, but it also seems kind of fitting- Paul (the guy who died) would have fucking loved it. I just wish it didn't take someone dying to make this kind of shit happen. And I wish he'd been there too.

Well, after some braving the damn phone systems, I've applied for interest relief from my student loan payments -- anything to keep a little more cash in hand to protect myself during the lock-out, at least until I get a new job.

Well, I'm applying for two separate programs -- federal and provincial -- and my provincial application is being processed in about 48 hours, while my federal one is at the stage of them sending me paperwork that might show up in two weeks. BUT, at least, they put a hold on payments while I'm waiting for and doing the application, so I don't have to worry about the money zipping out of my account on Friday.

It makes me sad that this is my happy for the day.

Barbelith is a funny place. The board may be a bit broked, the code sucumbing to the entropy's inevitable drag towards the plughole of the internet, but there's thousands of little gems scattered across its many rainbow hued pages. Plus most of the people are really very cool indeed.

I have broked free from my old and crappy ISP and am signed up with my new ISP. Initially my router wasn't connecting but then it turned out I was a dullard and din't have the leads plugged in properly. It was horrendously slow yesterday evening (downloading podcasts at a speed of approximately 30 minutes to download a 30 minute show) but it all appears to be fine this morning. Woot!
