... Therapy may help, or I hear there is a cream...

But... Hot Fuzz!

(Co-incidence of the week - Simon Pegg's character has the same name as the sound engineer on the Randall and Hopkirk: Deceased album... Not stunning, I know, but...)

"Do you think I should lose the waistcoat?"

I think you should burn it. Because if you lose it, you might find it again.

Oh, Simon Pegg, I was fond of you before, but now triply so.

(emits girlish swoony sigh)

Another on the happy bandwagon for the GOP smackdown. This morning was the first one for a very long time where I whooped "YES!" before getting up thanks to the Today programme.

Oh, Simon Pegg, I was fond of you before, but now triply so.

A friend of mine feels the same way you do. She was in the World's End pub in Camden a few years ago (by the pinball machine), and a friend asked her if she was alright (she was feeling peaky). "Oh, I'm alright" she said, "...just a bit spaced."
From behind her a snarky Mr Pegg says "Do you know how many times I've heard that?!" and walks away annoyed. Imagine how you'd feel, Kali- that's how she felt. Gutted as only a fan in a faux-pax can be.

True story.

Did she continue by taking a sleazy and abusive potshot at his lovely wife?

He is very nice, although I have heard allegations that he told SFX in an interview he was well behind Bush and Blair's little freedom policies.

Well, I haven't met him so I shouldn't cast dispersions on his character. I would love to meet him, though.

It's been my experience that most celebrities are actually quite nice people.

You've clearly never met Terry Pratchett, Dave Prowse or Lenny Henry then.

I finally got around to watching Invader Zim over the last month or so. Why did I only get around to watching Zim over the last month or so? Zim even talks like me. Maybe I'm really an invader. You know, like those people that think they were Digimon handlers or Aerie from Balder's Gate II, only real.

Hearing that Terry Pratchett is an asshole in real life, makes me smile for some unknown reason... is there a story behind it, Stoatie?

Dave Gorman gave me bicycle directions to the Grays Inn Road during the London bombings. Terrible, terrible day, but a lovely man. Saying that, my bezzie buddy carried several people to safety from a bombed-out tube train the same day even though his eyelids were partially welded shut, so he's my white knight.

Stewart Lee is a gentleman and a scholar too. His interview with Alan Moore on Radio 4 is one of the funniest chunks of audio I've ever heard. He stuck around for a drink with me in morecambe even though I had shingles at the time and looked like Jeff Goldblum in The Fly.

To get the thread back on track, Dave Gorman, Stewart Lee AND Jeff Goldblum give me happy.

Shame about Simon Pegg being a codpiece, but hey ho.

Stoatie!! I am so pleased to hear that! I met Terry Pratchett once (well, not 'met', went to a signing/talk) and he was just horrible - he spent the whole time bitching about how stupid and geeky his fans were, while simultaneously pretending that of course everyone here was a Good Fan, not like those Bad Fans that we can all LOOK DOWN ON AND LAUGH AT. Which is probably my (second-)least favourite behaviour in a cult author.

Sorry was that *cult* author? I Misread the 'l'.

Kali- no, she didn't know he was behind her, she was mortified. But he's a nice guy apparently, where's this Pegg-haterz convention come from? My ex used to live a few doors down from him, I heard no stories of his evilness.

I finally got around to watching Invader Zim over the last month or so. Mordant

I. Am. Aghast. If only I'd known I would have forced you to watch them all ages ago! I just assumed you had memorised all the Zim there was- he does talk* like you. I can get you a Gir T-shirt if you want one, when's your birthday? Like the Spaced quotes, Zim peppers my conversation, my most-used is 'I saw a squirrel- it went like this..' and 'Phase one went smoooothly.' Aside from 'Puny human dirt-babies!' of course.

Yep, Pratchett was a total git to me, too. I had driven from Loughborough to Oakham or somewhere like that (the arse end of Rutland, anyway) to bring some books to a signing. While everyone else milled round talking to one another and doing mini-convention things, he just sat looking like a grumpy currant and refused to talk to anyone. In his hat.
I still like his books, though, which I know is wrong.

Is the least-favourite behaviour having written "Queen - the Eye"?

Hee. No. But now I'm wondering whether William Mayne counts as a cult author. (No links b/c this is the happy thread, not the 'massive downer' thread, and the least-favourite behaviour is actual bad behaviour not just being horrible.)

I used to work in Luffy in my bookselling days. I loved the place. Mainly because it wasn't Cirencester, from which I had just escaped.

I had the *fortune* of working in and then managing what was a small chains most profitable branch. What they say about authors is true. Pratchett was unbearable I had to put up with him every other year for eight years. R*bert J*rdan was so large he broke one of our chairs. J*cqueline W*lson was late because she spent ages dressing her hands. I could go on bitching for a while...
Joseph O'Connor and Stephen Fry were both lovely. Although Fry was quite annoyed when a colleague asked him to sign a programme from Cell Mates.

In defence of authors their job does require them to spend a lot of time in a room on their own.

Seeing the Twilight Singers last night and being completely blown away. They're coming to the UK soon; go check them out, they were amazing.

After weeks of working like a Republican spin doctor, I now have a long weekend off and shall be giving in large in central London. Or staying in bed, surfing on the laptop. Bliss... Several bottles of exceptionally peasant liver-poison later, I'm off to a good start. Happy happy happy!
