Last Saturday, I got up early enough to get to New Covent Garden flower market: picked up twenty sprouted blue hyacinth bulbs for £8, marked down because they'd already begun to flower. Took them home, spread them between four pots/planters and put them on windowsills. A week on, they're in full bloom and the whole flat is full of their lovely sharpsweet scent. Must take some photos before they wither.

And, of course, my current bout of sleep-deprivation is giving me a morning happy of sorts - although 'slightly queasy euphoria' is probably nearer the mark...

I´ve just eaten a serrano ham sandwich. Serrano is my favourite ham, as good as ham from Parma, and 33 % less the price. Delicious!

I set off this morning under clear blue skies, went into a shop, and when I came out again there was a snowstorm. I dug my bike out and rode/ walked/ slithered my way home, grinning and even laughing out loud every now and then.
Best of all, almost everyone I passed smiled, said hello or even stopped for a wee chat about the weather. It was all very jolly.

I took Sheena (my puppy) to Greenwich today, to meet a work-friend's puppy, Rudi. And they had ACE fun. And I drank a lot of whisky. Everyone involved had a really nice day, as far as I can tell. And me and Sheena got home safely. It was ALL good, really.

What a nice day.

Getting hired on the spot gives me a raging happy. Getting every indication that this is a great opportunity and a definite step forward for my career is also smile-inducing.

And extra bonus happy points get awarded for leaving the Temp Job that I started today (and hated within the first five minutes) to go to the payoff interview. AAAANNNNNNDD! AAAANNNNNNDD! Having a voicemail on my cell after I get out of the interview, stating that Temp Job doesn't want me to come back and that they're pissed off that I went to an interview. GO SCREW, ASSWIPES! I ACED IT! AND YOU'VE JUST GIVEN ME TWO FREE DAYS TO RELAX BEFORE I START MY NEW FULL-TIME JOB!

I think I get quite a lot of extra points on my geek card now: I spent most of the afternoon coding.

Together with my lab partner (Uni - undergraduate research project), working, in baby steps, on a computer model of our physics lab work. And we actually got something vaguely sensible out of it by the end. Not actually useful or informative, only very tenuously related to the physics we're allegedly looking at, but a step in the direction of getting our heads 'round the concepts we're dealing with.

And it was quite fun, sort of exhilarating - helping each other understand what's going on, shouting at each other in excitement or exasperation, going "but look, no, yes, er.... what I'm trying to say is... damn, my head hurts" all the time. And, at the end, we had something that compiles, runs, and produces results that make sense.

In a more general sense, it's probably boosted my enthusiasm for my research and my degree at least a little, which is always good. Not that I don't like my chosen subject, but I do have doubts whether I'm doing the right thing every now and then.

Got my new touring bike yesterday.

The bike shop were incredibly kind to me and in exchange for taking the display model off their hands they threw in two bottle cages, a free upgrade on the pedals to Shimano SPDs, light mounts, a water bottle and a free upgrade on the front chainrings. The original chainrings were, I think, 25-36-44 (numbers denote number of teeth) or thereabouts. The new ones are similar to a racing configuration at 30-44-52. Should stack up very nicely with the 12-28 eight speed cassette.

And if you think this gives me a happy now, check me when I'm buring up a nice flat and not running out of gears for the first time in two months.

I believe a WOO HAA is in order.

Lilly Nowhere gives me a happy - ze is the most amazingly inspiring person I know, and I work with some great people. But LN is capable of making me and others look upon hir with the eyes of someone forever stupefied by simple respect for a person who does what they do, workwise or otherwise, to perfection - and with dedication to the making of others happy by hir art.

I salute you and your inspirational abilities, m'dear.

I have started work on the research proposal I have to hand in as next assignment for my psych course. It will test two hypotheses. One is simply tested by using a binomial sign test, the other will require a two-factor ANOVA for two levels of each independent variable.

In some odd way, this pleases me a great deal.

A touring bike! Yay! Any bike makes me happy, actually, but especially bikes on which to do crazy Tour De France type missions. The Tour de France also makes me happy. I don't know why. Cyclists are sexy? Almost everyone wins something? The lush landscapes of rural France?

I am happy because I just finished an essay that's taken me a long, long time to write and was very difficult, and resulted in an emotional eruption last week. It's just the right mix of personal stuff and theory, and it even has porn in it. Which means that for the first time in about four years, I will be having porn published. Under my real name, too.

Squee! So are you. Isn't it about time Gerald visited her relatives again? And brought you along?

To add to the happy theme, today I got an email out of the blue from a newly famous and shit hot academic, asking me to submit to the special issue of a verrrry prestigious and shit hot journal, on a topic which is equally shit hot and right up my theoretical alley. Oh. My. God. I don't even know how she found out my email address. Someone is out there waving a magic wand.

I'm bragging now.

Lilly Nowhere getting an email from a client saying "have you seen your shopfront in the evening newspaper?", taking a quick hike down to road to the newsagent, and yes indeed, finding it in full colour on page 11.

The paper in question (the Standard) is a bit crap, but is probably the most widely-read in London and is running a Save Our Local Shops campaign, and our salon is used in the picture for Stoke Newington. Yay! Free publicity!

It wasn't a two-factor ANOVA, it was a bloody Kruskal-Walis test, wasn't it. Bloody ordinal data.

Oh well.
