Limeys: if this doesn't fill you to overflowing with warm yummy feelings and scrummy hugglevibes, then I fear you. Greatly.

Everyone else: Next time you're wondering why the British are so fucking weird, this is some of what we used to watch as kids, okay? Just don't even ask about The Magic Roundabout.

Tell me more about this "The Magic Roundabout".

I've never thought of British people as being weird; strange yes, but never weird.

Ivor the Engine left me with a fear of Welsh people when I was young. A trip to Fishguard didn't help.

big, big, oliver postgate fan here.

just bought his autobiography for my sister. she saw him give a talk a year or so ago - apparently he sounds just like professor yaffle. she managed to get her hands on the original bagpuss puppet; she said it stinks. but it was fun sticking her hand up its backside.

Yay - Noggin the Nog... Nostalgiafest! Thank you, Dame Mordant.

What a fabulous bit of voice-over that was and such a gothy cartoon.

You're preaching to the converted as far as I'm concerned... funnily enough, I just went off on one in the pub this afternoon about how Bagpuss was the best anything ever... and STRANGERS JOINED IN!!! ON MY SIDE!!! Twas very cool. And (just for the record) everyone's favourite episode was the chocolate biscuit mill one. So that was nice.

What else could it possibly be? The Chocolate Biscuit Mill episode is a recognized classic, and rightly so.

What's even nicer is I was just trying to explain the concept of Bagpuss to Barry Auckland- (involving the use of Bagpuss cuddly toys etc)- and his web fu being way mightier than mine, I now have a Bagpuss themed desktop. Oh yes. It makes Charliemouse noises when you do stuff, and yawns and shit. Truly it is wondrous.

Anyone who hasn't seen the Big Knights has missed out on a cultural icon of similar magnitude, which has yet to be recognised as such, owing to its relatively recent provenance. But have no fear - it is available from the BBC shop...

BRIAN BLESSED!!! (sorry for the capitals... I'm not mad, they just seemed appropriate, given the wording.)

Re: Big Knights

Yes! Fantastic stuff. That's the one where everything is called 'Sir' something or other, even the hamster. Has this been given a regular slot, yet? I've only ever seen it during holiday periods.

Not since Flash Gorgon has Blessed made an outing so fraught with his customary subtlety, emotional depth, and pure comic verve.

And shouting.

The Return Of Rothkoid

So... who's up for the current incarnation of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang then? Given that it features BRIAN BLESSED!

And Richard O'Brien.

Oh yes.

[falls baldly to the ground amidst the celebrations, assailed by Michael Ball clones wielding machetes, and bellowing in tandem with the sacrificial ox in a curiously sexualised journey to the grave which is both awesome and vile, and dies, clawing at the running boards of an amusing winged vintage car]

The horror! The horror!

The Return Of Rothkoid

Bah. You're honestly telling me that the prospect of Brian Blessed as the king of the Vulgarians doesn't appeal to you?

Mind you, I'm only guessing that's who he is, y'know. I can't imagine anyone else in the thing that he could play. Hm.

It looks like that's what he is on the posters.... (I work a block away).

The Return Of Rothkoid

I walked past that theatre on the way home tonight, and imagined the noise he'd make meeting someone at the stage door, looking for an autograph.

WHAT'S THAT? AN AUTOGRAPH? COME HERE MY BOY AND LET ME SIGN THAT CHAPBOOK FOR YOU!

Then, a pause, and a whispered request:

WHAT'S THAT? OH... ALL RIGHT...

GORDON'S ALIVE?!

Ack. Sorry for threadhijack. This is becoming an obsession that does me no good.
