I can think of nothing that would have led you to that conclusion.
These are the circumstances that influence my perception on this matter:
1. You can only open it once. That is to say, there is no going back.
2. You were wholly unaware of what it contained. Weren't your actions irresponsible?
3. You were told, explicitly, to leave it alone.
