FAQ?

do we have one of these yet?

actually, i wanted to start this to request that perhaps, (even if you don't want to put up your own html guide because it'll take too long to put together), whether we could have a link inserted somehow into the page that comes up with the posting form, that tells us basic html. to webmonkey or something. would it be difficult to do that? frankly, it would be just as useful to have a permalink on all pages if that's possible. i for one would find it a godsend.

as far as a "proper" FAQ, is there one coming?

apologies if this has been asked already, but i didn't see a thread. and hey, maybe if it's frequently asked, we'll get an answer

(oh yeah, and is there anyway we could disable smilies? now that we've got the new clean look, they seem a little out of place for some reason...)

That would be because they're from hell.

Yes they look awful, don't they. I don' t know if getting rid of them is the best idea - some people seem to be quite insanely attached to them. But perhaps a redesign of them is in order.... Something simple...

As to the FAQ stuff - as ever i'm running around like a mad thing, but there's no reason why we couldn't assemble one out of the many other threads that have discussed this and put it online - except that I don't really have time to do it at the moment...

That would be very good. I've somehow forgotten how to do simple things, like code for links, or do italics or bold. Is that still possible here?

*BUMP* 'Coz I think we may need one-- especially where HTML and technical stuff is concerned.

I doubt very much that Barbelith will get a FAQ unless a bunch of people get together in one room and write it in an evening.

Why does everyone keep looking at me?

I volunteered on another thread to put together an HTML FAQ. I'll still do that, if you let me know which tags are legal on the board. I can then post the text up for discussion here.

Why does everyone keep looking at me?

Erm... text-only medium? Where you getting these eyes, dude?

This place must be bad for your health.

I'd be willing to help out of the technical end of the FAQ as well...like fridge said, just need an idea of what's legal here and what's not...

can we disable smilies?

You know, I started using the damn things originally because they were fairly unobtrusive. That is, the text versions of them. When they get converted into graphics, its awfully jarring. I like little text emoticons, they convey much in a short space. I really don't care for the graphic ones, they're a bit much I'll have to say.

I think it bears mentioning that in a majority of the past "lets make an FAQ" threads there has been a little too much focus on the whole barbelith thing and too little focus on the how to act stuff. Given the deomographics, current existence status of the comic and the manner in which new members are entering, perhaps a reversal of fortunes is in order.

No?

I think a statement of the philosophy behind the board in comic-neutral terms, and a few really basic ground rules (no harassment etc etc) are all that's needed. We don't want to start producing a Handbook To Barbetiquette.

It might be a good idea to clearly set out what each forum is for, and the sort of posts that one should expect in them. You might think this would be obvious from the existing content, but I know Tom was getting frustrated that (for instance) anything vaguely "intellectual" was going in the Head Shop.

I thought this was the best place to put this, apologies if not. I became a new member very recently and I have one very specific question to ask. I'm not sure whether it would be the sort of question worth clogging up public space with, but I wouldn't mind asking the advice of someone on one particular issue.

Go ahead and ask it here, hir.

Or you could just send a private message to someone think you can trust. Like, oh, say, me; I know everything, and I'm good at keeping secrets.

That sounded unspeakably creepy, didn't it? Sorry.

Oh, sure, Jack, you were so good about keeping the secret about my romance with celebrity butcher Graham Portwine!

Hey, I did my best--but you're the one who showed up at the Barbemeet with mussed hair, wearing nothing but a bloody apron and reeking of "special sauce"...

Ahem.
