Jonathan Woodgate hit in the face with an irony bar.

It does have a rather neat symmetry about it, doesn't it?

Footballer walks into a bar.

"Ouch."

"Take that, you racist cunt," says the bloke holding it.

Shurely 'it was an iron bar'?

Shouldn't that be iron "pub"?

Seriously, I heard this on the radio last night before going to work, and was horrified to find myself filled with glee. Hope that doesn't make me a bad person or anything.
According to the papers, it was one of his mates that did it as well! Even his FRIENDS hate him!

Well hang on just a second - there is every reason to believe that Woodgate's involvement might not have been racially motivated, no?

Maybe a teensy little bit of anti-footballer prejudice going down here, eh...

Quite so. There is no suggestion that Woodgate did anything *racist* during the lengthy and traumatic shoeing inflicted on a young Asain man.

That is just one reason why this is not funny.

Lyra, the judge in the case quite clearly said he believed the attack was not racially motivated.

However, I don't think it's true to say there was no SUGGESTION that the attack was racist.

This from the Observe, Dec 16 last year:

Sarfraz, whose leg, nose and cheekbone were broken
during an assault by five men in January last year,
disputed trial judge Mr Justice Henriques's ruling that
racism had nothing to do with it.

Moments before a chase involving the student, his friends
and a group of white men outside the Majestyk nightclub in
Leeds, one of the whites said: 'Do you want some, Paki?'. 'I
took that as meaning, "Do you want a fight",' Sarfraz tells
tonight's BBC Panorama programme. 'I just thought they're
racist scum, so I just ignored them because there were too
many of them and I'm not a trouble-causer.'

Local rumour, I'm told, was that Woodgate and others were notoriously both violent and racist and had done similar things many times before, which had not gone to court. But of course I'd never believe anything like that.

As the token Leeds fan round here, I think it's really not at all funny, and should be taken as seriously as such an awful attack should always be taken.

Yep.
