I guess. No beef meant Mist.

Totally plausible, if you ask me.

Agreed - I am a native speaker, and while I figured that The Word In Question was "inappropriate," I had no idea that it was as virulently offensive as it clearly (I see now) is. It just isn't a common word 'round my way, used in an overtly rascist manner or not.

Anyone heard a good quote, lately?

Thatīs okay.

So, to get on topic again:
a new quote (hopefully 100% cool this time):

I can partake in the essence of all things.

Hi, Nina. This post quite some way back clarifies my assumption of Mist's innocence.

I quite like toksie, but in this case I feel that his end (spreading the love, self-representing as the voice of reason) justifies his means (consistently undermining the idea that it is reasonable to assume that the use of the term is offensive by making up increasingly confused and confusing fantasy situations in which the use of the phrase employed is simply factual, involving non-standard interpretations of the word and of the way passport control functions). That's pretty much the shape of it.

If you like someone perhaps you should attempt to be a little nicer to them? In fact give them the benefit of doubt that they extend to another by treating them in such a way that they don't feel they have to defend themselves against your phrasing? It's just a suggestion you know, that you treat people with a nod to their positive intention while pointing things out to them.

Is poetry allowed? Been reading Blake.

"Tyger, Tyger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?"

That's not a bad idea. Toksie, I'm sorry if you feel I am being unfair. However, I would ask you to respect my feelings by not seeking to equate the adoption of an insulting tone towards one person with the use of language that is disrespectul to and hateful of entire races, as you did here:

promise you wont do it again and i'll promise to continue not to use racist epithets.

I believe it belittles the undesirability and the effect of racist language and is disrespectful to those who find themselves exposed to racism, casual or otherwise. I do not believe it to be unreasonable to make this request for future reference. I, for my part, will count five before responding. We will both remember that just because we can see the "post reply" button, it doesn't mean it's going to leave later.

i take it all on board and under advisement.
i would restate that i was not seeking to equate the two, however it may have seemed.
who said a trade had to be fair?
i once got swapped a book for a kiss.
books are clearly way better.
anyway...
i believe we have covered this enough here and elsewhere to leave it at that.

Could we get this whole steaming thread of why-won't-this-turd-break-off moved to a separate thread so we can get back to the mother fucking QUOTES, or is willful, compounded, confounded, impacted and fermented threadrot that goes on longer than the actual legitimate on-topic posts okay, as long as you're a mod? Because if so, gosh, I'd like to apply.

"So the modern Tong cannot be elitist - but there's no reason it can't be choosy. Many non-authoritarian organizations have foundered on the dubious principle of open membership, which frequently leads to a preponderance of assholes, yahoos, spoilers, whining neurotics, and police agents. If a Tong is organized around a special interest (especially an illegal or risky or margin interest) it certainly has the right to compose itself according to the 'affinity group' principle."

Because some things are more important than challenging racism. Like Morgue's sense of entitlement, including entitlement to perpetuate the very threadrot of which he is complaining, while complaining about threadrot in a thread in the Conversation. Is this a furry thing, Morgue?

I liked it when he complained about the off-topic after it had already finished. That was funny. Barbelith needs more moments of comedy genius.

Normally, I consider it an idea when doing a post that's begun wholly off-t, to then add a bit that's o/t.

like:

Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on "I am not too sure." - Mencken

I would've liked to see Haus and toksy run through a series of evermore obscure quasi-supplementary quotes, like the Barbelith version of sig files.

Tamara Willett Hurt
(prev. Milton FUCKING Friedman)
17:18 / 08.09.05
Surely the men who "doubted the current moral values" did so partly because they had some values of their own that they were more sure of?

H. L. Mencken also said:

"Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats."

No one can tell you what your life is goin to be, can they?

No.

It's never like what you expected.

Quijada nodded. If people knew the story of their lives how many would then elect to live them? People speak about what is in store. But there is nothing in store. The day is made of what has come before. The world itself must be surprised at the shape of that which appears. Perhaps even God.

We came down here to get our horses. Me and my brother. I dont think he even cared about the horses, but I was too dumb to see it. I didnt know nothing about him. I thought I did. I think he knew a lot more about me. I'd like to take him back and bury him in his own country.

Quijada drained his cup and sat holding it in his lap.

I take it you dont think that's such a good idea.

I think you may have problems.

But that aint all you think.

No.

You think he belongs where he's at.

I think the dead have no nationality.

No. But their kin do.

Quijada didn't answer. After a long while he stirred. He leaned forward. He turned the white porcelain bowl up and held it in the palm of his hand and regarded it. The world has no name, he said. The names of the cerros and the sierras and the deserts exist only on maps. We name them that we do not lose our way. Yet it was because the way was lost to us already that we have made those names. The world cannot be lost. We are the ones. And it is because these names and these coordinates are our own naming that they cannot save us. They cannot find for us the way again. Your brother is in that place the world has chosen for him. He is where he is supposed to be. And yet the place he has found is also of his own choosing. That is a piece of luck not to be despised.

So do not talk to me about the restoration. We are restored, the slime of the sea courses in my cells, my eyes stare out from under dinosaur lids, and the lion will not eat straw like the ox, but the lion may eat me. And I may eat the lion. We have sinned, that is true, but we will not be redeemed. We are the redemption.

All the people who want to go back, to achieve the restoration, they are fighting life and they bring death. We are going forward, and we are following a snake into the tall green grass.

Now, finally, it is written.

Stoatie quoting the Guardian (dirty lateshift):

On Brixton Hill, Bim is not surprised by the spectre of the Brixton crack squirrel. "I've only been released from prison today but I've heard about the squirrels. They are scoffing all the crack, more stoned than me. Have you ever seen cats with hash? Cats always go for hash".

Some great stuff from Campion's My Sweetest Lesbia:

If all would lead their lives in love like me,
Then bloody swords and armor should not be;
No drum nor trumpet peaceful sleeps should move,
Unless alarm came from the camp of love.
But fools do live, and waste their little light,
And seek with pain their ever-during night.

When timely death my life and fortune ends,
Let not my hearse be vexed with mourning friends,
But let all lovers, rich in triumph, come
And with sweet pastimes grace my happy tomb;
And Lesbia, close up thou my little light,
And crown with love my ever-during night.

This does for a lot of things what somebody on here said the Velvet Underground do to most music: make other things seem a bit silly, really.

If Quimper was once a mortal, and now is something beyond our understanding, then do you think when he said he was "a little light", that George was referencing this poem?

I must not have fun.
Fun is the time-killer.
Fun is for children, customers, and the help.
I will forget fun. I will take a pass on it.
And while it is going, I will turn a blind eye toward it.
When fun is gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain--I, and my will to win.
Damn, I'm good.
