... 17th-23rd february. feeling very shy about this, but i'd like to meet a few barbeloids--something fairly low key, yeah? [i feel like i'm asking you out for a date and i'm worried you're all going to say, "oh, uh, sorry we'll all be busy washing our hair that week."]

Don't worry about being shy, hardly any of us bite... low key is eminently doable especially if you want to meet mid-week - do you know london at all?[/LIST]

Would love to meet you alas and i definatley don't bite...the most you'll get is an unpleasant cross between a dribble a snort and a sneeze but i do that when i really like someone...

And my middle name is 'low key'

(no wait..thats loki actually)

now i'm disappointed that none of you bite <really?>, but how cool of you all... I know London a little bit--been there 3-4 times for a week or so each time--done the touristy things (Tower, the British Museum, etc. etc.): I have a map, and I'm willing to attempt to read it. I will be busy during the first day or so, if not the whole weeek (hard to tell precisely) during business hours, on the Strand. Staying in Bayswater in a place that is so cheap I hope it doesn't have rats (at least not in full view, anyway. but I'm willing to share with polite rats. Are rats in london polite?)

what about a midweek early evening in a pub?.. and i won't be offended if you go off to meet real life friends after an hour or so. or if you just say, 'gosh, look at the time, must be going ...'

Ha! At a Barbelith meeting? A likely story.

I've got a bit of time off round then but am not sure if I'm going to be in London or Sheffield, so maybe I'll get back to you nearer the time.

I would also be delighted to meet ya, alas. Good pubs near the Strand, anyone? (Please don't say the Chandos...)

Well there's the chesire cheese which is lovely old english pub all low beams and cavernous catacombs ... but its more of the fleet st. end of the strand (nearest tube- blackfriars) biggest bonus is that its a nice and cheap sam smith's pub

The Marquess of Anglesey in Covt Garden is nice, but it does tend to fill up with people going to the Royal Opera...

(.. what's wrong with the Chan.. no, on second thoughts...)

Would a reactionary right-wing antifeminist like me be welcome at such an event?

bill--of course! besides, i've already spilled the beans about our mallorca trip on another thread... heh heh

well, what about Wednesday of that week? (i.e., the 20th?) What time would work for y'all?

Ariadne

The Cheddar Cheese is magic - I vote for that too. Though I felt a bit grim after being there last night with the evil beer-monster Sleaze.

And Wednesday the 20th looks good so far.

Ooop as ariadne points out i got the name slightly wrong - its the chedder cheese- its still cheap english pub catacomb loveliness tho' and wednesday sounds eminently doable-- isn't there another barbeperson due over in london in late feb?

hmmm by the size of the response i guess we aren't going to be massively low key...

No. no! It's me being stupid - it's Cheshire. At least I think so! Anyway - it's the only cheesy pub in the street.

So I was probably right the first time -- cheshire cheese - anyhoo- it is the cheesy one on fleet st this map should show the rough area (between new fetter lane and farringdon) http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?x=531250&y=181250&zoom=1&isp=187&ism=500&arrow=y?181,111

yay--given where I have to be on the strand (royal courts of justice) it's perfect in terms of location... and I think 6ish should be fine. i will post again closer to the time, i fly away from my u.s. nest on the 16th, so i will remind folks on the 15thish, and perhaps be able to stop into a cyber-cafe type place to check in again once i'm in londonium. cheers again, all...

CHEESE it is the chesire cheese not cat (the cheese bit was the one thing ariadne and i could agree on, despite drinkiing there the night before)

But anyway, yes we will see you there with bundles of posative energy.

Ariadne

I think the drinking of the night before was the very reason we were so confused.

See you there, alas!

right right i leave a cheshire CAT smile behind just thinking about cheshire cheese.
(i seem to need some kind of mnemonic device now... cheesy cheshire catty smiley...)

(whew: just now I thought I had lost a pile of important papers that other people would be very upset if i lost. Ransacked office. Decided I was either losing my mind or had been burgled, which I wouldn't know because my office always looks vaguely post-burgled-ish...

anyway, they were locked away in a safe drawer by the department secretary....
whew. so my mind is still, seemingly, here, for now.)

Cheshire Cheese is nice - on the side of the road away from the river, if I remember right. Fleet Street? Very old.

Wish I could be there too.
