if the threat of a nuclear missile fired on the U.S. by a "rogue state" is the greatest threat to American security in the post-Cold War era, then how we explain what just happened Tuesday?

We can't.

Spending billions of tax-payer dollars, violating bona fide international treaty, and alienating the rest of the civilized world could never prevent these crimes, nor minimize the damage they have done.

Suppose for a moment if the U.S. already had a working missile defense system before today. What would it have done against a domestic, civilian airliner on a collision course for Manhattan? Not a damn thing.

I hope that if nothing else comes of these atrocities, the Bush administration will wake up and realize that putting more money into domestic preparedness is probably the only thing we can do to minimize the damage caused by future attacks.

These terrorists had the right idea about accomplishing their objective. as we saw, it didn't take more than planning and coordination to bring America to its knees.
and we would do well to prepare ourselves psychologically for the next airliner that knocks over a skyscraper.

Yeah, how can you trust a new (unproven) system to fight off shit from outside, when your normal (allegedly foolproof) system can't stop shit like this?
That's what you'd think.
However, I think "Dubya" (or Damien, whichever you feel most comfortable with) will use this to further his OWN aims- namely, building the Star Wars thing cuz it'll make his pappy proud.

Sorry, I'll be more clear. I agree with all of you that missle defence is a bad, bad idea. I'm torn cause I think a certain degree of militarized space is a nessicity to our current electronic 'first world' way of life.

As things become more and more wired the special interests are going to protect their central nerve cells. Wether this is a self fulling prophecy or not, I dunno.

Is there some sort of middle ground here?
