Help me find a better name for 'Post-Rock'

Because it's a bit of a shit name for a fine form of music really..

And it is, without doubt, an established genre these days with it's own distinct sound, scene, aesthetic, musical conventions and loads of new bands claiming to 'be' it..

So a better name..

1.Avant-Rock? Art-Rock? A bit poncy for sure.. and just as bad as the original..

2. Lot's of it takes in weird and wonderful musical elements from way outside rock, so how about we drop the rock altogether and just call it 'Post'? Gooder word as any..

All those in favour say 'aye'..

(and anyone who suggests 'beard-rock', 'Slint rip-offs' or 'nu-prog' gets stoned to death, ok?)

I think Post-Rock is a great name for it, really. It sounds kinda classy, smart, it feels right to me.

If I were to name it, I'd label it the way a lot of it sounds: Drab Downbeat Instrumental Rock.

Fred-rock, as in music likely to be appreciated by the character Fred from Angel, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off series set in LA? Works for me. I bet she's into a bit of Tortoise...

Hey, I like 'post-rock'. And I'm not knocking the chants. But are they FUN?

C'mon!

Are you using the term for specific artists, Riz? As this site proves, it's pretty much just a catch-all for groups who don't easily slot into any other genre definition.

Post Rock. The only time that The Third Eye Foundation and Flying Saucer Attack have been lumped together.

Well it seems to me that that's what it USED to be, but now you've got a generation of bands saying "yes, we are post-rock, we are influenced by Slint and Mogwai" and proceeding to sound like them (no bad thing).

And journalists seem to be slapping 'post' into descriptions of ANYTHING that sounds weird/longwinded/progressive, and you've got an audience of people (wooly hats & beards optional) who seem to listen exclusively to post-rock, post-electronica, post-hiphop, post-folk and probably post-polka for all I know..

So hense I think it needs a name, and I reckon 'Post' is a good one.
