You haven't really got the guilt thing working yet have you Tom?

If you don't give Tom money your an evil scum-sucking paedophile who deserves to burn in the ever-lasting pits of hell. And your Mum (or Mom) dresses you funny too.

Wimpy.

Just my luck that my credit card would expire just months ago. I should be getting a new one soon, though. No promises. It all depends on how they like my credit.

paypal has some system where you can use your bank account, or something. I use my debit card and its come in handy quite a few times since I joined

Well can anyone think of an alternative way to contribute for those without credit cards.

I'm looking for a way that is essentially monthly if at all possible - because I don't want to sign up to a full server's account at $250 a month (for example) and then find a month later that no one's prepared to contribute any more...

And a reminder - you CAN use debit cards like Barclays connect - or normal bank cards etc - as long as they have a visa or a mastercard symbol on them...

If you can find a way to give us your bank details securely, we could set up direct debits? That would work for the UK people, at least.

Tom Coates
23:09 / 17.10.01
Yes, I've thought about that, but there are two main problems with it.

1) It's difficult for me to keep track of / keep separate from my normal transactions etc.

2) It involves me distributing my bank details to people, which Im not entirely comfortable with.

Tom, are you counting my partner's double credit card payments?

Tom Coates
12:41 / 18.10.01
I'm not counting anything as yet that hasn't appeared on my paypal account. I know that he has said that he plans to subscribe, but I don't know as yet whether he has done so.

I'm assuming there are a few people who are just waiting for their paypal membership to be finalised before they subscribe, but I'm not counting any of it until it actually appears. We have $37.50 a month so far from confirmed subscriptions and I think it's not beyond the bounds of reason that with the people who have pledged to pay when they are able that we could get this up to $60 relatively easily. After that, I don't know what we'll do. I increasingly think a server is the answer, but we'd need a full 100 people subscribing (or 50 at $5 a month) to get us up to that level of regular finance.[/LIST]

Uh... I thought I'd signed up WITHOUT needing that four-figure digit... it told me I had, anyway, just by using my password. Can you confirm this, Tom?

don't need the code if you're american, i think...

I won't be able to check that you've done it unless I know your name, I'm afraid...

Well, Sirius, it looks like I was wrong.

Lo and behold. I look about, and suddenly I find myself face-to-face with no member profile 168!

Fortunately, I was still able to view the thread.

Which means the technical summation I've provided you was (gasp!) false!

The member profile issue does not prevent you from reading threads.

The internal server errors do.

Tom Coates
22:08 / 18.10.01
No. What happens is that internal server errors cause suits to become corrupt. When those suits are corrupt, threads that are posted to again which had a post from someone with a corrupted suit become impossible to view. I have to then run a script to delete the corrupted fiction suit, and the person concerned then has to reregister. This seems to happen every couple of days at the moment - possibly as a result of the amount of traffic on the board...

I'm getting a lot of internal server errors lately. Does that mean my suit is... becoming corrupted???

('Sok. I've all ready been thinking of changing my suit soon...)

Thanks for the data.

But wait .. I am able to read threads with member profile issues -- just unable to post in them. Conversely, I'm sometimes unable to reach a thread (but usually able after a couple of retries) when I encounter the "Internal Server Error".

Exactly what sort of corruption are we dealing with here?

Mister Snee
12:45 / 19.10.01
Corruption's corruption. A byte added here or subtracted here, a malformed filename, a lost cluster, a bad FAT entry. The possibilities are endless, and it's all the same to these damn newfangled contraptions!

Or a mismatched inode, right?

I meant what exactly is susceptible to the corruption -- is it that profile data that gets hosed, or what? And uh, what's getting written to the profile? Is it just incrementing your post #'s?

OK. No offense guys - but if there's ONE thread on the entire board that SHOULDN'T be experiencing thread-rot, it's this one.

This thread is about encouraging people to part with a small amount of money each month so that we can run a server without crippling me financially...

I recently donated using WorldPay. It takes credit and debit cards and is UK-friendly.

I don't know how much it costs to set up an account with these people but they seem to provide a more comprehensive service than PayPal.

Again I restate, my effort to contribute is a bit fucked cos it won't accept my card for some reason..

I wonder why. That's really weird. I don't know anyone else who's had a problem registering - admittedly the process is kind of boring and laborious, but it normally seems to work. Hmmm. Don't worry about it for the moment...

I was worried my card might have become cancelled/invalid (state of student loan allowances being notoriously up in the air), but I've used it for other stuff since, so it must be ok..

Isn't paypal just a credit card thingummy? I've got a feeling that you can't register debit cards.

Lothar Tuppan

Most debit cards in the U.S. are backed by either the Visa or MasterCard systems so they effectively work as credit cards even though the funds come from your checking account.

The common term for these are 'Check Cards'.

I could have sworn I posted this already but I didnt see it; apparently you can connect your paypal to your checking account, or pay money into your paypal account beforehand (how you do that I dont know)

yup, you're right bitchiekittie. And in fact if you do the whole thing properly, they'll give you five bucks to link up!

Don't know if this is available for les anglais, however...

It's true - if you're in America, when you sign up they GIVE you a fiver.
