Okay. wildstallion, if you want a future on this board, spend some time reading the fucking thing and figuring out why the use of terms like 'trannies' will get you kicked off it. Only start posting again once you've come to understand that.

Wrt 300, was all of the shit present in Miller's original book? I'm guessing the answer's yes, in which case it's unlikely that you'll see it repeated in this film, but if Snyder brought that to the material himself, it's a justifiable concern.

Steady on, Randy. I think wildstallion may be genuinely confused about the term transphobia, and its application to 300, which I would say is more terrified of threats to conventional masculinity than precisely transphobic. You're certainly right that Frank Miller's 300 was a seething mass of neuroses to start with, though.

Oh, I certianly won't argue that the original 300 isn't free of problematic portrayals of masculinity. However, and I'm going to be a bad Barbelither and not have a specific link at hand, Snyder has gone on the record as including transexuals in Xerxes' harem because they creep people out.

I need to find the exact quote.

Even if he hadn't gone on the record regarding that, he also did very clearly use transexuals as part of the language of the grotesque that he build up around Xerxes. It was one of many extremely problematic things he added to flesh out Xerxes being evvvillleee or at least "Other" which for the purposes of 300 is the same thing. And there aren't any in the original book, I checked.

So while I figure Transphobia is part of a whole spectrum of gender-based, race-baced, and possibly political complaints one could make about 300, I think it's still a valid criticism.

whoa, ok e. randy and anyone else i'm sorry if i offended you but i don't think "tranny" is an offensive term, i know some transvestites use the term themselves.... i'm not here to start fights though i just want to talk about cool shit with all the groovy people on this most excellent board so if my post was offensive please delete it!

Speaking of the guy who played Xerxes, he actually played a transsexual in a brazilian prison movie, a character called Lady Di:

we should probably get back to talking about watchmen!

this is a painting of the silk spectre that will be in the film:

Mongoose - ah. I saw 300 on a seatback, so I didn't get some of the finer details there. No idea if Frank Miller included icky trans narratives, but yes. If all correct, see your point.

I think the expectation that a movie about Spartans should conform to with-it lefty sexual politics is... amusing.

Absolutely! Especially since it was so utterly faithful to recreating the society of Sparta in every other element.

I'm just saying, man. As a character study of the vilest douchebags in Western History, it was pretty all right.

But I should bump the 300 thread if I wanna talk about that, so, yeah, Watchmen. CGI, bro!

For quite a long time the Spartans didn't have private property and saw homosexuality as a natural, beautiful occurence. Whether it was wise to expect an action film made about them in the current political climate to reflect this is perhaps a different matter, but still.

Just FYI, this portrayal is actually less accurate than that of 300.

I'm not sure how far to go on this in a thread about Doctor Manhattan's CGI wangdoodle, but the short version is that Spartan men lived collectively but they owned land, which their wives administered and which were tilled by helots. Spartan men were not allowed to practice a trade or to own gold or silver, so the work of actually making the economy work was the job of the perioeci (resident non-Spartiates) and helots (indigenous slaves).

Talking about homosexuality in terms of any pre-modern culture is a tough sell - certainly, Spartan society fostered massive homosociality, but it appears to have encouraged pederasty, specifically, rather than what we would recognise as the general weal of man-man love.

Wristwatch Nuke

So i just saw the trailer and really enjoyed it. Visually the film looks fracking awesome. The Owl-ship emerging from the river was a thing of beauty, multiple Manhatten's uncomprehending faces, Nite Owl kicking ass in the prison, Silk Spectre smoldering, Rorshach's rooftop dwelling. All good.

All good visually.

But then I tell myself that of course it's going to look good visually. I'm not letting myself get too excited. I'm also going to try and not get over-saturated by the year of viral ads which will no doubt be coming our way.

I will fail.

Ha! I knew this film would never come out! I fucking knew it!

I hope Alan Moore gets called to give evidence, it'd be entertaining to see just how grumpy one man can get about Hollywood.

Given all the buzz and $$$ anticipation generated by the trailer, DC printing 200,000+ copies, etc., I foresee a financial payoff settling this case and allowing Warners to release their movie that Everyone Is Eagerly Awaiting In 2009.

Mark Parsons
08:37 / 20.08.08
Despite Fox's claim that it simply wants the movie not to come out, I have a hard time believing that will be a hard and fast POV. Money talks. Plus, I would imagine halting the movie's release might engender some VERY bad industry feelings towards Fox.

Imagine Snyder going the Terry Gilliam route RE Brazil - "Dear Fox, When are you going to release my movie WATCHMEN?" Sneak peak screenings to critics, etc. Can Fox be shamed? Actually, the evidence might indicate "No" as an answer...

Mark Parsons
08:42 / 20.08.08
Also, I read on Deadline Hollywood (Nikki Finke is an industry cheese) that Fox would have to pay for all marketing expenditures prior to bringing the case to court. That would seem to massively offset/overwhelm their development costs, which they claim should have been paid.

Wouldn't it be great if Fox DID get a permanent injunction and Warner's covertly released the movie via the internets? Free WATCHMEN the Movie!

Well, seeing as Fox make films of Marvel comics, so it's Marvel-Fox versus DC-Warners is it just, to quote Leo McGarry, 'an old school thing'?

Actually, considering the Rattnerized Eggsmen 3 and the Funtastic Four movies, Fox is more like evil, unholy leatherface-wearing imposter Zombie-Marvel. They will eat everything and turn it into smelly zombie rupert-murdochean bloodfarts.
