In a weird way they've been one for theory and one for practice. You want to talk about Feminist theory, you go to the Head Shop. You want to talk about a Feminist demonstration, or a news story about a feminist demonstration - you go to Switchboard.

True. Ok. I like the idea of making the switchboard more clearly 'Resistance', but I'll agree with you that we need something else for the Head SHop. Something that carries most of the same associations, but is distinguished a LITTLE more stronly from Switchboard.

I kind of miss having somewhere to just talk about the news, and offer up imbecilic and ignorant commentry on current events like an old man on the porch, without getting bogged down in theory or activist credentials. Neither forum seemed right for that.

I like the idea of renaming, but could we keep in mind how we had this conversation last time, and a lot of people seemed to think that lateral, metaphoric names worked better to inspire people to post stuff than simple labels.

And Lee, what I love about this place is the theory and/or stupid wanky activist credential element. How else are we supposed to learn anything?

(Then again, I think I've always been on the vanguard end of the Barbelith political spectrum. Without ever meaning to.)

Oh I like these things too, really. What I miss is the more casual, subjective review of current events in something like The Information. I don't think The Conversation fulfills this and, at least in their descriptions, The Switchboard and Head Shop seem to exclude it.

grant: 'thinking' sounds a bit vague, not to mention overly accessible. I very much like the idea that the Head Shop should sound a bit intimidating, like it's somewhere where people should try and apply some degree of intellectual rigour... It's only by forcing ourselves to think hard that we reach useful conclusions.

I like "Head Shop"--I knew what that was pretty immediately. But um, I still don't know why the Switchboard is called the Switchboard. So I'd actually like the Head Shop to remain and only the Switchboard be renamed. (Well, okay... I like "The Think Tank" too for all the reasons given.)

The stupid suggestion that leaps to mind is "The Machine Shop." Unfortunately, that suggestion sucks.

Is plain ol' "The Resistance" too simple? The Trenches, The Barricades, Jodie Foster's Army?
