Ah, listening to a play for today thingy as we speak - a tale of nice middle-class teenager growing up with a pair of drunken parents trapped in a loveless marriage.

Quality.

I just got a little taster on one of my sporadic trips across London. "Check Up" - not one of the gems really, but there was a very charming Welsh guy called Merlin talking about his blood pressure. with a nice line in gallows humour.

[edited to remove the 'ah' from the front of my post, it didn't read well after Haus started his with the same expression]

John Peel - Home Truths, saturday morning. Sometimes so twee it makes me want to puke. Other times laugh out loud funny and gently heart warming. I love it.

it's a one-off, and I think it's on tonight. It's at about 11:45 or some time like that- all I can remember is it's when I'll be at work. And no, I agree with you... with the exception of League of Gentlemen, R4 comedy works best on the radio.

Dead Ringers 9.30. Will they ever reach the dizzy heights of William Hague singing 'Im like a bird' down the the phone to record producer. Or their wonderful Archers parodies on tv 'Oh No', the Ruth Archer fan club can hardly wait.

Saw it being recorded at Television Centre last night; very funny sketch with 'The Doctor' Dom Jolying it up in a department store.

No!

Dead Ringers on TV is possibly the worst idea known to man. Ah well.

Agree with everything said about home truths. Also: Acropolis Now is one of the best comedy series on the air, but it's probably got a minimal audience because the humour's so obscure. Well, it's not obscure, because anyone can laugh at the base stuff... but the root of it's moderately obscure. Ah well.

Charlotte Green has, officially, the sexiest voice on radio

Zocher - having done some research this morning, I'd have to disagree with you about Charlotte Green having the sexiest voice on radio.

I'm not sure who has - maybe that woman from Xfm, i forget her name.

Nah... Charlotte Green, every time.
And yes, the Shipping Forecast IS the equivalent of hearing rain on your window. (As someone said in -I don't remember which- one of the papers a couple of weeks ago, when they say "good", it's like they're thanking you for having such nice weather...)
Glad someone else likes "Home Truths". I thought I was weird. There's just something essentially wholesome about the whole thing.

I think it was the greatest British public in some poll who voted Chazza's "the sexiest voice on Radio" recently. IIRC Terry Wogan was the naff 2nd choice or male poll winner.

Whilst I do think her utterance sounds like honey with a 99 flake crushed into it being spread on fluffy scones, I myself prefer the manly, querulously disciplinarian tones of Sir Brian Perkins.

But it's very easy to find a voice "sexy" without any visual or other sensual impedimenta to distract you. This is also true for finding Barborama fiction suits "sexy".

This gives me pause when the prospect of IRL interaction is mooted. All my illusions would, doubtless, be smithereens on some pub floor somewhere.

*bumped* to provide an appropriate car park for the fight that is brewing in The Headsick Arms.

The thing *I* most dislike about R4 is the flipping pauses. Every time I turn the damn thing on it's in the middle of a pause and I have to wait at least 3 seconds - sometimes more - before I have it confirmed by a fade-in crowd scene that the radio isn't knacked.

Saveloy, don't tell me *you* don't like Radio 4?! All the quirky British stuff that you are well-known for. If you were a radio station, Radio 4 would be it!

And you don't like Bob Dylan either. If this were speed dating, you wouldn't be getting a date from me.

Well, ok, just one.

Having said that, as brilliant as Radio 4 is, I maintain a standing policy against all radio drama. Because voice is all they have, they always over-do eveverything in an attempt to communicate their emotional state. I need a spit guard on my radio due to all their over enunciating.

Sensible voice- Does anyone mind if I propose a move to Music & Radio? When the thread started there wasn't really anywhere for Radio stuff, but now there is...

Did anyone else catch the Jackie Collins/Darcus Howe smackdown last week? I haven't had so much fun since the time someone accidentally said "cunt" on Front Row a few years back.

Joan Rivers, dude.

I caught it in the sense that I was sleeping in and the radio was on, and her screeching woke me up. Libby Purves could’ve quietened her down a lot sooner, I reckon. By the time she was finished I was wide awake.

I'm afraid I missed the relative merits of their arguments because I was too busy going shhh... shhh and pulling the blanket over my head.

Stoatie. Stoatie? STOATIE.
22:53 / 26.10.05
Yeah, Joan Rivers. Soz. I always get those two mixed up. All the repeats and the transcripts in the papers missed out the first, milder argument, which went some way towards explaining quite why the second one kicked off so massively. I think what she was trying to say was that race shouldn't be an issue in America, but it came out more that race wasn't an issue in America. Which didn't go down well.

Loomis:

"Saveloy, don't tell me *you* don't like Radio 4?!"

Oh, blimey, I like lots of Radio 4, I listen to it a fair old bit. There's plenty I don't like about it, of course, but on the whole I reckon it's A Good Thing.

I don't know if this is healthy or not, but I tend to see R4 as a benign authority. As long as it is there then I can - foolishly - believe that there are civilised, sane people *sort of* in control of the world outside. I mean, I understand that Charlotte Green and Linda Snell don't actually have any say in the way the world is run, but it feels like they do.

It's like Ganesh's musings on Big Brother - the madness is less terrifying when you know there is someone sane, perceptive and reliable in between it and yourself. Reflective shields and Gorgons and all that.

Apparently, under John Major's premiership (these things being all secrety at the time and changing with each new government) the sealed documents (only to be opened in case of war) on nuclear subs had, as their rule, to make sure a nuclear strike wasn't started on false information, that if the Today programme was off-air for three days in a row the war had started and the envelopes should be opened for instructions.

And if Hazel Woolley ever inherits Grey Gables, the war will be over and the Forces of Light will have lost. Lynda Snell has already lost the battle to save the Cat and Fiddle for an ungrateful Borsetshire.

Anyone listening to PM at the mo? Eddie Maher is pushing some guy (sorry, only just turned the thing on, so I don't know who he is) to define exactly what he means when he moans about "political correctness". God bless Eddie. He'd make a good 'lither.

THEY'RE AXING THAT HORRIBLE UK THEME FROM THE BEGINING OF RADIO 4 WHEN THE WORLD SERVICE FINISHES!!!

I am TEH HAPPY.

I invariably wake at about 5:29am, just in time for it to start its millenia-long trudge across my ears.

It's horrible.
