Those are great! Looking around i see that there are quite a few similar Garfield takes. Like usual i seem to be years behind discovering this stuff.

They are sort of great. Another one I saw was the cartoons completely intact exept for the speech/thinks bubbles, and that worked really well. I think it's the labouredness of Garfield that makes it fail, the way everything has to be telegraphed ahead of time and then explained afterwards. If you take all that away, the funny starts to creep back in.

Apparently even Garfield's creator digs it. It is pretty brilliant...and sad.

That first one is fucking horrible. In a way.

A good way.

Keggers. Classic.

My friends and I were discussing this last week and have come to the conclusion that Garfield exists in the same fashion as Tyler Durden exists. Garfield is John.

I always liked the idea of doing Sesame Street where Mr Snufflupagus used to tell Big Bird to do terrible, terrible things.

Then they ruined it by making everyone else able to see Mr Snufflupagus as well.

I've been reading the funny pages at work and Garfield's been silent more often lately, I wonder if Jim's been taking the hint.

The thing is, though, Garfield-Garfield would be a lot less funny without the original. If G-G had come out first it'd be a great slice of (morbid) life, a lot different from the comedicshitmarriage comics, footballporn comics and everything else found in the funny pages section of the paper. It'd be innovative and still humourous.

Knowing how the strips are supposed to go however, and knowing John's previous role as the goof add depth as we consider that John Arbuckle may have actually lost his shitchips. It's contrast to the super-anthropomorphic world of Garfield, with just one man talking to himself alone in his house versus arguing with a giant cat, is a cold mirror. I find myself trying to fill in the missing dialogue and that kind of dissonance, like in all good jokes, creates comedy.

It'd be great if G-G and Realfield were actually informing G these days, leaving extra room for other interpretations of course.
