My parents sold my soul to the Devil and all I got was this lousy new job.

Unassuming underachiever discovers on his 21st birthday his parents sold his soul (before birth) to Leland Palmer--I mean, the Devil. Instead of sending the boy to Hell or having him kill people--both of which our hero assumes are his options--the Devil tells him he'll be a "reaper," essentially a bounty hunter for escaped damned souls. Our hero doesn't want this, but by gum, he'll do it or the Devil will take his mother's soul instead, and she doesn't even get the option of being a reaper. Hero's slacker friend rejoices. And thus we begin.

I watched the pilot a couple of days ago and I must say, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Aside from the adolescent humour of the best friend/dopey sidekick, this show is clever, well-written, funny, and equal parts icky and serious where it needs to be. Bret Harrison, who plays Sam, our hero, is affable, funny, and cute. Of course, the coup de grace is having Ray Wise play the Devil. Talk about perfection! His Devil is a jokester until he isn't. Again, my only complaint is the sidekick character, Bert "Sock" Wysocki, because it seems pretty one-note and frankly a reason to be annoyed. I guess even reluctant heroes need a goofy foil.

Getting on my feminist high horse for a second, I LOVE that this show was created and written by two women.

Anyone else seen this yet?

Nope, but sounds like it could be fun. Ray Wise is perfect, I imagine

How come no mention of Kevin Smith as director? Any Smithesque moments?

I haven't seen this, but the combo of Wise as the Devil and Smith as the Director, and ya know, the overall fact of a series about a guy whose souls is the Devil's. Least I can do is have a peek.

Weeeell, I know that Smith directed the pilot, but I wasn't looking for any "Smith moments," per se. Then again, directing the pilot of two aimless slackers seems enough reason for Smith to have been interested.

I am currently downloading the second episode to confirm that my instincts are correct.

So it is like a slapstick Brimstone?

I will give it a download.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's slapstick, but it's pretty funny. Perhaps the slapstick could best be confined to the hero's friend, whom I know I will either grow on me or cause me to gnash my teeth.

Totally worth a download.

all I know about this show is that Smith directed it and that Missy Peregrym (spelling?), the female lead on the show, has played a baddie on Smallville several years ago.

All I ask that regardless of your hate/love for Kevin Smith, please judge the show on its own merits.

Ignoring Smith entirely: I loved the first two eps. I seem to recall a lot of hate for Dead Like Me on the 'lith, though, so YMMV -- I do, however, find Ray Wise hella cool compared to Mandy Potemkin as the surrogate father finger with an agenda.

Five episodes in and I am pleased as punch with this show. Which probably means--as it always does with something as fun and quirky in the realm of teevee--that it's doomed. The CW has signed up for three more eps but no word of the show's future after that, though it is garnering ratings.

If I had a Nielsen set.....
