Do it, Haus. I mean, it's not like you can damage the place any more than it already is - the very worst that'll happen is you'll hasten its end.

In my new 'don't give too much of a shit' mode, I'd considered going scorched earth. But then I gave up, what with the not giving too much of a shit.

Fuckus of Nosense should be the first to get thrown overboard, obviously.

Okay Haus, given that Fuckus has just requested that we ban him, do you want to email Tom or shall I? I think you're probably more likely to get a response than I am, given my recent comments on the state of the board.

There's precedent for this, btw, in case anybody was wondering - at least one previous occasion when some knobber played the "just ban me already" card and Tom responded with the "okay" card. Can't recall which of our many idiots it was, though. paranoidwriter?

Paranoidwriter, yes. It's a difficult one, because generally we have been a bit inconsistent on people asking to be banned. Paranoidwriter was, but then he was doing so in the middle of a thread which was tending towards him being banned anyway, so it was in part context. Sypha Nadon, most notably, demanded to be banned and was told that he had to pluck up the courage to scramble his own password. Looking back, I think that was the wrong decision - people who have a moment of lucidity in which they ask to be banned, but are too combative or compulsive actually to pull the trigger themselves should be treated with compassion and mercy, and have the keys of the car removed from their hands. Too late for this board, perhaps, but hopefully it will inform my behaviour in future social spaces.

If Peter has given you his username and password, though, that's now moot. Unless we are about to see another hole in the system open; we'll see.

How about if I just sort of progressively prune? Would anyone, at this point, object? I feel one could make a quiet but pleasant place...

It would be a slower-moving board, but that can work. So I don't see why not.

I suppose it would depend what the criteria for applying the secateurs are.

I wasn't being serious, but OK, let's run with it. Essentially, the criteria would be pissing me off. Or, if you'd rather, disrupting the board, or having indulged in behaviour that should have resulted in banning when we didn't have bans. And perhaps a lucky dip!

You're not going to ban me are you because if I'm for the cut I can start behaving really badly.

Incidentally isn't the best indicator that this is the end the simple fact that half the conversation moderators have locked themselves out of barbelith permanently but haven't been removed from moderation duty?

I have only posted here a couple of times in the past few years I have had a login.

Think I started coming here for the discussion about Morrison's New X Men ... which I still enjoy through the white hot room page ..

Once that ended I would pop in occaisonally and would only ever be drawn to the Policy & Help forum ... weird ? I guess I have enjoyed the conversations about what Barbelith is , what can be done and what can't and people's frustrations with that ... you don't get that on a run of the mill board ...

But every time I come back now the board seems to be closer to death ( or inactivity ) ..

I have nothing to add beyond the fact that the constant efforts to stop trolls seemed to stop new blood coming onto the boards and the unique software that runs this board seems to (in conjunction with the membership issue) have inadvertantly killed it ..

Or maybe boards like this can only be finite ... who knows ... I'll be sorry to see it go if it does , as an experiment it is /was interesting ...

Apologies for not adding anything really new to the debate but I just wanted to have say before I can't ..

I am concerned that no one who has signed up since 2003 has any knowledge of Knodge and his actions towards barbelith members. If you are a moderator and you do not know the policy concerning posts by Knodge/Knowledge please can you PM a pre-existing moderator who has been around for a while and who you feel most comfortable discussing matters of board policy with.

Erm, I'm pretty sure we did that (deleting Knodge-threads). Either that or the Knodge-thread disappeared of its own accord.

What was the problem again?

I don't want someone here to end up in a position where they are harrassed at home because they don't understand how to conceal their identity online. If they engage with the Knowledge that could happen.

There's always the worry that someone will see the request and think 'but this guy's only put some photos up' and disagree it. It's important for moderators who don't understand why his posts are deleted regardless of content to contact someone and find out if they are curious. There are too many reasons for the policy to be effectively exercised and too few moderators who are active to operate as we did a few years ago.

I don't really think there's much need to keep on acknowledging his existence, in this thread or on this board, is there? The point's been made, we can link people to it. The policy remains the same as always - mark and delete on sight - and that won't change.

How about we do what he's incapable of, and move on.

I just wanted to pop in and basically spit out a quick, "Yeah, what sammyboy said." There's a good deal more sloshing about in the backbrain but frankly at this point I find it difficult to muster up the energy to contribute much. And that is as much affected by my increasingly dim feelings toward online communities in general as it is the present snail's pace of the 'lith.

Chewing on the idea of unpacking that a little, but I'm afraid that, once unwrapped, the ideas would be either too bittersweetly sentimental or too scarily obsessive for most to enjoy. Short version: I've invested a great deal of interest and energy into online communities of astonishing variety, content, sincerity and successfulness, and at this time nearly all of those communities are withering and being replaced with what I feel is the much less effective, more impersonal and yet more invasive, honestly uninspiring MySpace Rentaboard Social Networking (Now In Three Dee!) model. So I spend most of my time online prodding and pruning my pet projects back into a life that only vaguely resembles their former incarnations, and popping back in here with a sigh and a smile whenever a thread I like has been bumped up, whether I've personally added to it or not.

I actually like the slow pace, but eventually I reckon it'll grind to a halt. Quite a shame though. Of the little gardens I've watched and been a part of, I'd rate 'lith as one of the most successful. MetaFilter works somewhat as an Otherlith for myself, but really, there's no other not-space out there that's quite the same.

Really, it was pretty much the entire post I was hat tipping toward, the post itself being more or less simply a hat tip toward the setting 'lith. That the combined constant efforts to ward off trolls and maintain Barbelith's status as a "safe" space, and the board's unique/frustrating software have sung a perhaps inevitable slow death knell etc. Not awfully constructive, but as SB said,

...I just wanted to have say before I can't .. as an experiment it is /was interesting ...
