A bit belated, but shut up SHUT UP SHUT UP. Jesus Christ, if genes responsible for determining human intelligence can be found within a decade, could they be tinkered with in Nobel Prize-winning scientists while they're still alive?

Does it need new batteries? That's usually the signal for low batteries, but if it's been going on for months, you may have to except that the fire alarm is possessed by the spirit of a dead grandmother demanding penance from those living within the house. In which case, you need to burn the house down.

What? It'd given the fire alarm a sense of purpose, at least.

Also: SHUT THE FUCK UP, anxieties.

SHUT UP WATSON

I was just on my way to post that one.

And Shiny - got it in one, though given the method by which he got to the Nobel was somewhat ethically dubious to start with, I can't say for sure how far he's come to get to his current state.

It's odd though, that someone who is obviously good at analytical thinking should see fit to peddle unexamined tosh. At first I hoped for the best, that by all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really Watson might have been discussing the balance of different kinds of intelligence (and the associated optimum learning styles etc.) between different cultures, or that maybe some kind of genetic component had been found regarding said intelligences. But instead he's just reading from a BNP leaflet. It's sort of sad in a way. And in another way also quite sickening.

Still, I'm sure he can lie low round Dawkins' for a while. They are, apparently, BFFs.

I'm sad, sickened and more than a bit speechless at that particular nugget of racist stupidity. Yes, stupidity. Dr Watson, you are STUPID. DO YOU SEE?!

Shiny: The Countdown to Thirty
22:13 / 18.10.07
Yes it's especially horrid because he's using his scientific rep to peddle something that isn't science at all, and is in fact Alf Garnet style 'Well, it stands to reason, doesn't it' gibberish. That stuffs awful whoever happens to be saying it, but in this instance the vileness of it just gets worse and worse the more I think about it.

22:41 / 18.10.07
Indeed - I believe the wording was people who have to deal with black employees find this not true (interesting, incidentally, the position assigned to his hypothetical black people - presumably their position as employees and never employers arises from their intelligence and nothing to do with a racist society or anything). Scientificrigourmachinego!, or whatever it is those kool komix kids sez.

That's what happens when scientists who are great experts in a givem field of science start thinking they know about fields of science they aren't really experts in: stupidity ensues! It's like hearing Dawkins talking about sociology, only even worse.

... On the plus side, since yesterday one of the (two I think?) places that asked him to talk has told him to SHUT UP. Which probably doesn't achieve much, but is a small consolation.

Watson has issued an apology but has said he was misquoted. The paper in question says they have him on record though.

But in turn, can the racist commentators on the page liked to above please SHUT UP. And fuck off too.

I can only begin to imagine what the Daily Mail comments page is like; I dread even contemplating scanning them briefly.

According to the Times he says in his defence: "I cannot understand how I could have said what I am quoted as having said."

So what he is saying is probly, "I cannot remember making this statement, but if I did, I don't understand the words coming out of my mouth." Which is pretty rich coming from an old git who proclaims himself a genius at least twice monthly.

Having never been one of those here who demands rigorous adherence to the scientific method, I feel fairly comfortable about saying it's actually self-evidently bullshit. It just clearly IS.

(I knew my scientific laxity could one day come to be of use to everyone!)

That said, I have enough faith in science to also be VERY confident that someone more "science-y" will be able to back me up on its bullshitness with diagrams and fizzing test tubes and stuff.

Noone has to back you up. It´s Watson, who has to support his statement with proof. And since he already started with the "misquote" strategy, he already admitted that he´s not able to.

No, but I know a man who does. WARNING: Not for the stats phobic.

Cosma Shalizi has written a couple of these monsters now, and they are cracking good reads, as long as you are ok with stats stuff like variance and correlation.

I'm not stats phobic, but I did feel compelled to get out a textbook while reading that, and I won't pretend to be in a position to poke holes in it, so my understanding will be rather thin. At first glance, it appears that the author thoughtfully provides math-deficient-reader-friendly summaries, though, so I encourage anybody who just looked at the graphs and skipped it to take another look.
