Good bye, Medulla. We will keep you in our hearts, as you fly off to other days and worlds. Good luck interviewing, and remember that even if they give you a pound of gummy candies, they may be unfaithful.

Hah! Dayshift totally belongs to the London crowd, but Nightshift is all about the Canadians.

Okeh, I'm back. Weird social call turned to business turned to me making some extra cash for actively not doing something. Best kind of pay, that 'stop working on it now' sort.

New shift and everything. Nice.

Someone's trying to take a sorta longish short story of mine and stage it in West Hollywood. They opened up the conversation asking me a 'what do you think about...' regarding a certain celeb, and I thought it was just latenight celeb-crushing timewasting conversation, but it turns out to be actual interest in my work. It's twelve short scenes of different broken relationships, from the romantic to the political.

At least a thousand dollars let it sit with them for a while, and see if they can pull it off.

Opening bits: “The only time I felt better than being without you, is before I knew who you were. Maybe six days after we’d gotten together, but still, that would be five days before I knew you. See, I’ve had time to think about this, and frankly, you weren’t any damned good. All there is to it.

“I’m with someone new now, looks like Little Anthony and enough in the sack he might as well be the other six Imperials, too. You remember that problem we had. He’s got more money than God, he’s hung like Jesus and we’re in love like movielove. Honey, he simply satisfies where your lucky strikes barely even hit.

Which, makes me neurotic now, because the producer's told me (after I asked) not to make any changes. And I want to.

My stomach did a weird little twist between sexy & talented and the realization they want to perform something I wrote. It's a good thing I'm drinking whisky and coffee tonight. I need the counterbalance.

"Jack stood for a moment at the door and watched as Shackle stared down while Tony set a whisky and coffee in front of him. The whisky was a good choice, of course; Tony's skill with coffee making was at best questionable."

It'll be interesting to see how they handle casting, since I very carefully leave a lot of genders, ethnicities and other elements open. That first bit is either a woman leaving a woman for a man, or a man leaving a woman for a man, with the left two floors downstairs performing in a bar while e's practicing eir Dear Jane.

Papers, that's beautiful. And it's a beautiful drink, too, especially if it's exceptionally cheap coffee. Good latenight discussion, mad ideas drink.

Is caffeinated tequila legal in parts of Canada? Some states allow it, but I know when it first hit the market it was outlawwed in California within like two months. That always seemed to be pushing the envelope, to me.

There have been several caffeinated alcoholic beverages in Canada at various points - the last one that I can remember with any clarity was "Rev," a lamentable blue solution that was apparently vodka and kept me up one experimental night when I should have been sleeping. But, you know how it is, first year of university and dubious taste. It tasted like cough syrup.

Y'know, I've never understood vodka? I feel bad because I know some people are daffy for it, and I always feel a bit odd going out with friends and it's like six vodkas on the rocks, and me asking for whisky, neat. Or in coffee.

I was young and foolish then. Had not, if memory serves, been awakened to the joy of a tall gin and tonic with a slice of lemon (no limes to be within fifty feet of the glass, thank you). I can't really be bothered with vodka now, although if I'm experimenting with martinis...

"Hello, Tony." She took a seat on a stool beside the Professor, giving Tony her big smile across the counter. He could call her on her shit right off, sure, but Tony liked Jack, she happened to know. Sweet on her, which made these interviews at the bar go very smoothly, most times. "Can I get a gin and tonic?"

"Anything for you, Jack. Lemon?"

"Don't even let the glass look at a lime."

"Beefeater or—"

"Bombay. Don't fuck with me, Tony."

"Never, Jack."

Yeah, I got turned on to the gin and tonics 5 years ago at a friends wedding. And to martinis at my uncles, and to scotch at my aunts to sangria and pina colada (not together!) at my other aunts and rum and coke has always been a family favorite. And now its wine. Hmmm... I must try more stuff on my own.

I can remember the precise moment I realized there was actually good quality gin in the world. Now that's a 'one to grow on' moment, there. Took a slightly-shamed, but incredibly jovial episcopalian preacher to introduce me.

Rye & ginger ale goes down very easy. I'm not overly found of the screwdriver, but a classy breakfast with a mimosa hits the spot and makes you feel like a society darling.

My family tends to be down on mixed drinks, and we're all pretty firm on ice in drinks being some kind of Yankee-invented sin, unless it's, y'know iced tea where it belongs. I veer off that towards certain ahem martini cough mixed drinks, but rum and Coke or voddy and Mountain Dew always seemed... no cowboys, either. It's like the unease has been genetically programmed in me.

Absinthe -- keeping in mind it was the slightly watered down "legal in Canada" version -- had me drunk for approximately twelve hours after four shots-worth following the caramelized sugar rules. I seem to recall a cat spoke to me and at one point I teleported downtown.

It'd be a good title for a stage play. There could be Marilyn Monroe impersonators.
