...b-b-but Cthulhu's an alien... aren't all the Elder Gods?

Cthulu's an alien, Voltron's for fighting space things, and it could have been an American.... Spacegodzilla! It's not, but it could have been.

Cthulu wouldn't have stopped with Manhattan, certainly. But I'd pay real money to see a Voltron knock-off wandering the streets like a great stalking lizard being baited with dumptrucks of fish. In shakey, handheld Blair Witchy style.

Look's good! I just hate the waiting with stuff like this. -_-

The sort-of death knell for the Voltron theory.

New, more expansive trailer, with—if you squint—an actual glimpse of the monster. There's a hard carapace. Now I'm thinking Gamera.

Also, shockingly, "Cloverfield" appears to be the actual, real, honest-to-god title, rather than a "Blue Harvest"-style fakeout.

"I want a monster movie, I've wanted one for so long. I was in Japan with my son and all he wanted to do is go to toy stores. And we saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own monster, and not King Kong, King Kong's adorable. I wanted something that was just insane and intense.[...]"

that Bloop recording put the scares on me..

and well, if it's Gamera, is it "our monster"?

badass gamera with paws that could take the head out of the statue of liberty

i don't know if by "our" he meant "one we've created" or "Western".

Anyway, I CAN wait for this movie to come out but am very interested to see how this movie makes use of Blair Witchian camera direction, in terms of special effects and it's effect on the plot.

Speaking of which, I'd quite like to see entire bits of this movie skipped in places for dramatic effect in-terms of the camera/s not always being on/being shut off/running out of power. Think of the "missing reels" in Deathproof. As a survivors-eye-view of a horror film this could be a great tool. The horror you imagine is worse than the horror you see, etc.

I think you've pretty much summed up the appeal right there.

I've wanted to see a whole slew of other horror movies done in a BW style for some time now.

Am I missing the huge carapace? The whole trailer is so dark and jerky, I can't tell what's what.

Sixth photo down. And remember, "Tagruota" is an anagram for "A TORTUGA."

I think it's a carapace. The guy who posted a comment about the image says it's either that or dust and debris kicked up.

Well duuuh...

So in addition to the carapace turtle Tortuga monster we also have those two smaller monsters pulling somebody in half in picture five. So the Gamera Tortoro monster has babies? And they're bears?

Actually, it's mentioned that since the hypothetical name of the creature in Cloverfield was called "The Parasite", it also means that the fifth pic down could possibly be what happens to someone who become infected. Certainly looks like someone who's suffering from something terrible being aided by suited government types.

The rumors I'm getting from Ain't It Cool News is two-folded: that pieces of the monster that get blown away (say, scales for instance) turn into smaller versions of the original monster; and also people who get attacked and do not die turn into smaller versions of the original monster, werewolf-like.

Whichever is the right one, or both, it reminds me of the Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot plot

That slo-mo video kind of puts the kibosh on Gamera, doesn't it?

Really curious now what the deal is with the monster. Old property? New property? Will be interesting to find out!

Anybody here seen any of the post-2000 Gamera movies? They're a *lot* like live-action anime, with sort of a two-way possession happening between a teenage girl and a giant, prehistoric turtle monster. Their personalities merge.

That doesn't sound dissimilar to that parasite description there....

I think the guy that is making it has actually said somewhere that the monster is entirely new.

Nuke Kids on the Bloc

With the combination of BIG DAMN MONSTER and (potential) body horror, well, it might not be a Cthulhu film in name but the feel sounds very close.

I am the excitement.

OK robbed from other places but given a new name.

I think Abrams' comment about a less cuddly King Kong and his son's fascination with Japanese toys should bring us to:

Entirely new?

Not really. Probably an homage and re-imagining of sorts for Western culture.

Leastways, that's how it sounds to me.

Phex: Dorset Doom

It'd be hard to imagine an 'entirely new' form of monster, since we'll always draw inspiration from real-life animals that frighten us- reptiles, insects, parasites. Godzilla is a lizard, Mothra is an insect, John Carpenter's The Thing is a parasite, the Alien from Alien is a lizard-insect-parasite- has there ever been a movie monster that didn't exhibit traits of real-life animals?

There was the ball monster from Dark Star. But did it hop on wicked webbed feet?

The crystalline entity from Star Trek was pretty freaky; and there's the Angel from Evangelion whose imposing body was actually it's shadow, it's real body being the shadow underneath it. Please to be confused.

Also, Parkman was eaten on LOST by a monster that didn't exhibit traits of real-life animals.
