Village Voice reprints a story on an $8million settlement.

The story was written in 2002, but not published until now. Has things that still aren't part of the public picture in it, and updated annotations by the reporter.

“The Wollersheim case is among the most important decisions against Scientology in its history because it showed that the organization’s standard practices used against a member were harmful,” says Stephen Kent, a sociologist of religion at the University of Alberta who is one of the few academics who studies Scientology in depth.

Frank Oliver, a former Scientologist who once gathered information on perceived enemies as part of Scientology’s current intelligence wing, the Office of Special Affairs, explains why the decision was so repugnant to the organization, and why paying even a cent of it would be considered by Scientologists a horrendous defeat: “Scientology’s entire premise is that the Hubbard technology is infallible,” he says. “The underlying concept of the Wollersheim judgment is that the Hubbard tech is harmful. If they pay, they validate the argument that the tech is toxic.”

Ooh, looks like all sorts of unpleasantness over on Enturb- as far as I can gather (I haven't been on for a few days and there doesn't appear to be a sticky) Tommy Gorman threatened to beat up an Anon for comments made in the Thunderdome section of the board towards Tory Magoo (TD is, for the uninitiated, Enturb's answer to /b/- pretty much unmoderated, NSFW, and "what happens in Thunderdome stays in Thunderdome"- it's kind of a way to keep shit off the main boards, as well as an excuse for lots of pictures of Tom Selleck), with the result that both Tory and Tommy are now fairly unpopular with a lot of posters. It would appear I missed it all, so don't really know what's going on, but a lot seems to be about Anonymous reclaiming its "ego-free" status. Which actually was starting to drift away from it, and which has always been its strongest feature.

I'm not sure what was said- I tend to avoid the real shitflinging- if I want /b/ I'll go to /b/- I like my "no holds barred" stuff to not be context-specific. When I want "random" I want "random", not "random relating to x". I'm guessing it was nasty, though, but then Tory HAS been told in the past that that's what TD's LIKE...

I'm not sure of any of this... a lot of people are accusing her of using tech against Anons*, but I'm pretty sure a lot of it has to do with various people's feeling that she was "egofagging" and trying to be a leader... not my own opinion; neither she, WBM or Tommy were ever Anonymous, even by definition, and didn't claim to be- but I think it's been brewing for a while.

AFAICT, Tommy threatened Daywatch IRL, hence the whole shitstorm. OCMB have been going mental too. Hopefully it'l all blow over in a few days- either way it's a learning experience.

*Daywatch himself has said that a YT video in which she, according to a couple of the more hotheaded TDers, appears to be advocating the use of tech (and therefore "still OSA zomg!!!") is actually nothing of the sort. So I think that's Enturb getting a bit too tinfoil-hatty...

I have read a few versions, but one version said that magoo said that she was threatened with rape and assault by some wannabe-/b/tar-hero in the thunderdome. In the thread I just linked to and/or the connected ones, someone says that the mods found no evidence of such threats in the posts in thunderdome, and that she has imagined it/altered the event in her memory.
Gorman said he'd beat up anyone threatening Magoo.

Depending on what of the he-said-she-said-she-said-he-said you believe, Gorman brought violence to the table when he leapt to Magoo's defence or some anon brought it by threatening her, Gorman responding to that by bringing some of his own.

People are also suggesting that Magoo is not as free of the influence of hubbard as she might be. There are echoes of the tech in her actions, they say.

From what I can gather, very few people are taking Magoo's side, the split being basically WhoCares Vs GTFOMagoo/GTFOGorman

I don't know how accurate my reading of the situation is, snatched as it was between other, more taxing tasks.

I'm keeping well away from all that shit, and continuing to not post in TD. I think the problem with Thunderdome, and where it differs from something like /b/, is that in /b/ you have EVERYTHING. In Thunderdome you JUST have the nasty shit. There's no balance. Thunderdome is like what people THINK /b/'s like when they first encounter it, which isn't very nice at all.

Numbers were way down, but that was kind of expected. The protests aren't the focus anymore. It also occurred to me that going to the pub or walking down the street afterwards is usually more effective than the demo (though the demo needs to be there in order for it to work) because that's when people come up to you and ask about the mask, and that's when you get to tell them.

Also met Nono the Parisian clown (there was a whole malarkey about him being fair-gamed a few months back on Enturb- the guy's a fucking legend) and he was wicked.

Although I was reminded of RULE ONE of any kind of protest EVER... the guy who ends up with the megaphone will almost ALWAYS be an absolute dick.

Amsterdam was quiet too, it being the middle of summer when everyone leaves town and there are a couple of pop festivals. Still, there was a nice little crowd and morale is generally good. Amsternonymous are on pretty good terms with their OGs!

FWIW, while Tory is definitely on the outs for what she pulled, the Tommy Gorman business was about 90% troll. Tommy was good with SF anons well before the raid, and we got a great side benefit from it all. Apparently a local asst. DA and a member of the org cooked up a plot to provoke Tommy and start an incident. Tommy never took the bait, and the Scientologist's assault was witnessed by the police and several bystanders. Result was one arrest and a possible huge headache for the asst. DA who was caught giving legal advice to the assaulter.

That's interesting... there seems to be a lot of back-and-forth on the subject of Tommy on Enturb, but I think he's still fairly well-regarded (recent post after one of his videos was something along the lines of "we WILL give you shit when you fuck up, but we will also give credit when you do good, and you did good there" or something like that).

Obviously, being in London, I've never met the guy, but he's always struck me as a pretty decent chap, if a little volatile.

I think something that needs to be remembered is that one of the real problems is the way Co$ fuck's people's heads up, so we need to remember that ex-$cilons will by definition be a little fucked. It's kind of the point, and while it shouldn't take anything away from what they can do, they should probably be granted at least a little leeway.

Well, I think you pretty much nailed it there.

Tommy's not the brightest guy (who would be after Hubbard barley formula?), but he's not as nuts as was played. He is sometimes a little slow to catch on.

He is rather valuable for his memory, however- he knows them all and can spot one of their PIs a mile away.
