I was ill this morning so I phoned in and said I'd come in later. They said take the day off. I am now well.

I sit typing things with my cat, some hobnobs, real coffee, a cigarette and my pretty ivy plant who has shot out this summer like fireworks.

Ahhhh...the pleasures of idleness...

I love that your cat has its own laptop and cuppa.

Don't forget the tweed coat.

I love that pic. I really want a hobnob (and some beans).

I have a plant just like the one below the ivy. Even if you donīt water it in weeks, or if itīs covered in dust, or whatever neglect it faces, it does not die. Every one or two years a leaf or two turns brown, but thatīs it. I have no idea what itīs called, but it is an amazing plant.

...Tis Phalaenopsis, Mr Hairdo, the Moth Orchid. That thing they are currently selling in B&Q all over the country. "Pandora" is the name of this particular species. Does your plant not occasionally bring forth flowers like these ? :

Close up - nice patterns inside:

Yes, it requires almost no water, being an epiphyte.

I'm at work this afternoon and I want your desk, tea, hobnobs, cat and laptop instead.

No, I meant the plant with the fleshy leafs to the right of the laptop. I didnīt even see the beautiful halaenopsis in the cat picture.

Aha, ok now I see. Itīs a good thing you clarified, that way Iīve discovered my cameraīs batteries need recharging. Tomorrow I can take a picture so we can compare our leaves!

Itīs not the same; itīs a different kind of plant, isnīt it?

Don't be sad mist. Your plant is just as full, fleshy and beautiful.

Thanks for the kind words! Iīll pass them along to my plant.

For some reason, I wanted to link this thread to the one we had recently, where posts about plants turned to some weird old science fiction, but I couldnīt find it anymore.

Hmmm.

Mr H, does that thing have aerial roots? If it doesn't need water and has aerial roots it... *might*... be a different orchid.

Quite often they sit there for years without doing anything and then suddenly throw out a flower spike.

I'm probably wrong, though.

I vaguely remember it having such a flover spike a couple of years ago. So it might be an orchid? That sounds nice, Iīll water it more often to show it my appreciation.

If it IS an orchid, they can be a bit fussy. If it's one of the epiphytic ones, it won't like sitting in dampness. Half a teacup of water every week or two will make it happy. The ones they sell in shops thrive on neglect.

That sounds like the amount of water it got over the years; so no increase of water for you my fleshy plant. The earth is so dry, it has been pushed up by the plant in two or three big pieces that have been shaped by the pot.

No bark, itīs the earth coated with stuff.

That looks a little un-orchid like, Mist, but that doesn't mean it isn't. There are no roots poking out of the ground, which most houseplant orchids usually have, being epiphytes (nearly always). The flesh at the base looks more tender than most, not as leathery, which they also usually tend to be--to protect themselves from dry spells with no real root systems and soil to exploit. That is some fungus on the surface, you might think about repotting it with some fresh soil, though the fungus might not be more than digesting compost in the soil mixture. It looks pretty good, though. Do you remember the flower at all?
Sibelian, your phal is kicking. I've got seven or eight orchids, six are phalaenopsis and right now none are flowering.
What is a hobnob, if I might ask?

I wandered around my neighborhood, took some CDs out of the library including the latest Bonnie Prince Billy, bought my food for the weekend and had a chat with the butcher. Then I bought my brother a late birthday present of some scrummy olive oil (after a short tasting session), and ended up in this cafe for a coffee and a read of the paper. Tonight I shall be drinking wine on my balcony, with music and internet including Barbelith of course. So I shall see you all later in the drinking thread.

Gosh it's lovely out there. I just did a load of weeding, and two local cats have been hanging out in our garden (& house, Cobweb is a cheeky little minx). We ate stuffed vine leaves & hommity pie, minted water and strawberries in the sun. Lovely.
And it's Sunday tomorrow!

You have a lot of lighters, Sib.

I'm rather a prolific lighter-thief. Generally speaking my smoker friends ask me for a light outside pubs because more than likely I nicked theirs absent-mindedly.

And lighters are one of the few things I keep losing. And they are among the few things that I get REALLY ANGRY about losing.

So, I always have lots.

I should have encoded a secret message into that picture and put it on the Puzzle Thread.

So, is life in Barcelona really as pretty and lovely as it seems like it would be?

Yes, but I am verrrrry poor, and have a shittier job than before, and live in a small room and did I mention that I'm verrrrrry poor. But luckily, it only costs €1 to sit in a beautiful square having a lovely coffee and chatting with friends for 2 hours. And it costs €0 to sit on the beach with a book and stare at the sea.

Plus itīs safe. I have not felt 1 single moment of potential threat in 9 months here, no matter what time of night or where I have been.

Iīm meeting a stranger from Flickr later to wander around taking photos and practice my Spanish, so Iīll add another photo to this thread tonight.
