The Long Good American Friday

Paul W.S. Anderson, director of such gems as Soldier, Aliens Vs. Predator, and Event Horizon, is apparently going to remake the Long Good Friday for the US market, set in Miami.

BBC story

Why?

Nobody ever mentions his successes, though - like Magnolia, Boogie Nights or even the naive charm of Punch-Drunk Love.

Would "The Ladykillers" be a British crime movie or comedy in this context? Because while I wasn't crazy about the Coen remake in all respects (anyone with the last name Wayans tends to hit my painfully-unfunny nerve) I thought it was a step up in a lot of other ways.

Magnolia, Boogie Nights or even the naive charm of Punch-Drunk Love.

Paul Thomas Anderson.

Paul W.S. (as in, What! SHIT!) is a whole nother kettle of hack.

I think Haus was being facetious.

And so the trend of terrible Hollywood remakes of enjoyable British films continues.

Where will this end? I hoping for an all star remake of less enjoyable fayre such as Sex Lives of the Potato Men...

I can't wait to see how they re-imagine Bob Hoskins' 'fuck the Yanks' speech at the end ...

My entire schtick relies on one person in the audience not getting that. God love you, Panic.

I still haven't dared to watch the Stallone Get Carter. Does it really exist? I mean, really? Not only have I never seen it, I have never met anyone who has admitted to having seen it.

If Ladykillers gets on (and it's got crime, so it should), then The Wicker Man ought to be there, too. It also has crime. A policeman and everything. Even if it dilutes the Michael Caine factor of the initial list.

Really, this sort of thing wouldn't bother me if it meant the original was as easily found in a random DVD-selling store. Which, they never are. The moment American version of The Italian Job got out on DVD, the otherwise supercheap discs of the absurdly superior original disappeared from anywhere by a discount bin, and those are, by nature, unreliable.

(I could just order things online, I know, but it's principle and presence - I could go looking, but a general potential audience shouldn't have to.)

And, sincerely, while Haus makes a good sideways point with his deliberate confusing above, I have to say, I'd take Soldier or Event Horizon over Magnolia in a heartbeat. Mortal Kombat should probably keep you from remaking already good movies, all on its own, though.

I've see large quantaties of the Stallone Get Carter in Virgin Magastores on 'sale', and that is as close to seeing it as I care to get...

Can we have a Withnail and I remake, how about Scum? or Jubilee?

Dude! They've got to remake every single one of the Carry On films. George Clooney as Sid James, Tom Cruise as Kenneth Williams, Tom Selleck as Bernard Breslaw

Aw, dude.

You should have gone before we left.

Clearly the Americanized Carry Ons are an Eddie Murphy vehicle. Necessitating a fat suit.

Eddie Murphy in a white fatsuit? Have we found out Hattie Jaques?

Adam Sandler as Barbara Windsor ... because nothing, but nothing, is as funny as drag.
