Thoughtfully create
Italic variants.
Although you could argue you're doing that because you're forced to, and otherwise people would just hit the bloody I button in Word anyway. But the designers I work with have kittens if you try to do some design work and use the Italic or Bold font in InDesign instead of actually selecting the appropriate tilted/weighted font.
