Yes no.
Just braved a viewing in the office and I'm very pleased that I did. Tres excite.
Unlike Jack, who seems to have a very clear idea of what he wants to see*, I'm not sure I did have a locked down vision for the Joker. Okay, I need him to be scary and devious and bizarre, and to embody archnemesisness (something which the recent comic incarnations have singularly failed to do - Christ, I'm not sure they've even made an attempt); Obviously, I need him to look like a nasty clown-faced baddie, and I have a sentimental attachment to his purple suit (but had it been omitted I'm sure I would have coped); But, you know, other than that I'm easy - I just need it to work in the context of the piece - and as far as I'm concerned it sure as shit worked in the context of this trailer.
He was properly frightening. Gordon's line about "knives and lint" was chilling, it said this guy, he's the fucking Joker, he's not a man with a special origin, someone you can understand and empathise with, he is. the fucking. Joker. and you can't reason with him, and he won't feel your pain, because his entire being is summed up by that face, that suit, the crimes he's committed, and a bunch of fucking knives. Nolan has described the character as an absolute, which gives me the impression that we won't be seeing how he became the Clown Prince of Crime, and this snippet spells out exactly what he absolutely is very nicely thanks.
And the voice. Upon reflection, if there was anything superficial that could've killed it for me it would've been bodging the voice. But nope, Mr Heath and co seem to have a real handle on just how I wanted it to sound. High pitched (but not too high pitched, and without always being high pitched), theatrical (but not too theatrical), and very, very sinister - although, of course, that last is somewhat dependent on what he's actually saying.
As for plot detail, I really wasn't expecting to see much of it, so no disappointment there. This was always gonna be the Joker's show ("See you in December"). Like Iamus, I'm happy to assume that the guys behind the first movie aren't going to fuck this one up.
*And let's face it, Jack, was there really anything there to tell you that this guy doesn't have a good time doing what he does? No there wasn't |
