Oh, right -- I remember that now.

Gaaah.

So, has anyone drawn lines from all the characters to existing superheroes their powers seem modeled after?

Claire - Wolverine
Nathan - well, most of 'em.
Peter - Rogue
Sprague - Capt. Atom/Firestorm (with bits taken from Dr. Manhattan)
Niki's husband - Kitty Pryde
Niki's kid - The Drummer (Planetary), who else?
Niki herself - hmmmm. Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, I suppose. Although I keep wondering if there's a Capt. Marvel/Miracleman component to it -- a body that switches in and out of our dimension.

Who are the writers reading?

Creator Tim Kring doesn't read comics. At all. So that's another theory shot to shit.

But as we established on the Heroes main thread, the show has heavy involvement from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale ~ as co-executive producer and writer, and in-house illustrator respectively. I can't imagine these two major comic creators aren't having significant input into Heroes' use of superhero mythos.

Yeah, I've seen other credits for writers, too.... And even if there's no way to trace one writer having read a specific hero, it'd be interesting the way to see a different version of the same, I dunno, archetype/myth/carnival attraction might unwind. It's interesting, to me, to have a Kitty Pryde who's a young black man from Vegas wanted for (I think) a murder/robbery/jail break rap.

I'm wondering if Sylar, for instance, is going to be played like an evil Martian Manhunter (cuz it seems like that to me).

There are obvious and massive comics references though. What about Sylar's watch consistently reading somewhere around five to midnight?

from what i've read and heard from the creative team, loeb is there in part to make sure that they DON'T tread on any established cliches or archetypes that exist in comics. they've apparently thrown out ideas that skewed a little too close to what was laid out in comics history.

surely the 7 minutes to midnight reference isn't a comics reference, but a to The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists' Doomsday Clock?

Unless that, in itself, is a comics reference I am not catching, which is possible.

erm, that's not meant to read "yuo stupid lula! hahaha!", more "help me, I don't know the comic you're talking about".

But it really doesn't read like that. At all. For which I apologise.

Okay, last night's episode... the new painting had a Human Torch looking guy which I beleive confirms that the radioactive man does indeed go nuke in New York. I love Claire and Peter (Also Nathan cause he's a dick). They're second only to Hiro.

Next weeks episode LOOKS like a flashback episode, but...

Apparently Hiro can't use his powers to bring himself back to the present, so must live out the 6 months from his jump back in time. Current rumor is that he uses that time to find out as much as he can about people with powers like his, perhaps by contacting Mohinder's father.

Red Frog Rising, I was referring to The Watchmen, but in itself that's probably referencing the Doomsday clock.

It does in fact reference the Doomsday clock.

Sylar's presence, by the way, seemed a *lot* like Magneto in the last episode. Moreso from the films than the comics, actually.

Did anyone see the teaser for next week where they showed Sylar's face more clearly? Was it Peter or someone else? I saw it, but before I realized they were showing Slyar and my eyes could focus they changed the clip.

I do like that Hiro is spending six months in the past/the States, that way he could come back with a bit more English. I hope he manages to save the waitress. I liked her.

Christopher Eccleston is joining the cast of Heroes, speculate, speculate won't you? Some reports say he might play Sylar but I think that's probably bollocks.

He's not Sylar. Apparently he's a hero who's been around longer and using his powers longer than the rest of them. I suspect he'll play some mentor type.

A very very sexy mentor type.

Well, that would be Tennant. Eccleston would be: "Phasing? That's fantastic!"

Oh yeah. Did Ecclestone always say "fantastic", not "brilliant"? I must be mixing him up with that guy from The Fast Show. Does Tennant say "brilliant", in fact? It all seems so long ago now!

Werll I hope he plays it as an English northerner. I don't want him to be American.

Odds are, grant, that Eccleston's character will be the same general character he always plays. A little bit mad, a little intense, impatient, tragic, and sexy as fuck.

So as a speculation thread... what hero do you think eats it next episode?

I don't think it's going to be Claire, Peter, or Hiro. They could kill Niki and leave Jessica in her body, but then you won't have that whole alterego thing. You could kill her husband but killing the only black guy first has been done to death. They're spending too much time on Nathan do off him now.

I'm thinking they're going to cheat and kill either the radioactive man who we haven't grown to love or the pixie girl.

Thoughts?

Elijah, Freelance Rabbi
16:41 / 28.11.06
I am worried they will kill Ando, so as not to actually take out one of their major players, but still kill someone we like.

I also don't think the Nathan screen time makes him immune, if he dies saving the world it becomes about his fall into the criminal world and then his ability to rise again and be heroic.

Those are my picks anyway, Ando or Nathan.

Pixie girl = Preacher.

And the watch from 1917? Yeah, %no way have any of these creators read Watchmen%. (Latest episode written by the same guy who wrote this. And 1917 being the year of Einstein's Special Relativity & all.)

Using that as a theory, the cop would be the one to get it, what with the Nite Owl thing and all.

By the way, I'm watching these things online, and occasionally there are these ads for Fidelity Investments that come up before the chapters. Does anyone know what song they're using for a jingle? It resembles one that I know well (but isn't it).

Niki=Deadman (specialized).

Didn't she just kill her husband?

I have a suspicion the little Drummer boy is going to become an orphan. Because Batman Superman Aquaman Spider-Man and on and on.

Parents killed in front of him by Joe Chill, yeah.

Thus the whole resonance with his young ward Robin, whose parents were also killed in front of him (on the tightrope, I think).

But Batman's parents died in slow motion, with pearls dropping, intercut, frame by frame.

Bets on a swipe of that image or this one...

...are probably good.

I like the fact that the show's so good we're at the point where we're speculating about what individual shots might look like!
