Maybe this thread is a bit premature, but what the hell.

This year I'm going as Rose Tyler, but I've yet to decide which outfit to wear. I need to find a tall mate to play my Doctor (Nine or Ten, whichever) and I want to win the costume contest at the party I go to every year.

You?

As much as I love Halloween, and always have, you are aware that it's much more of an American phenomenon than a British (or European) one? I think that's kinda sad, and I think we are getting more into it as a nation, but we're still not quite there yet. I think, for the English at least, it probably has something to do with the celebration's proximity to Guy Fawke's Night - and around these parts we do a mean Bonfire party. Lewes fireworks is one of the most demented celebrations yer ever likely to see.

I reckon a lot of 'lithers would love, love, love it.

(November the 5th is also my birthday so I get all the fun)

That makes me sad.

But then I wish I were in the country for Guy Fawkes Night.

But on the subject of Halloween (I got a little sidetracked there), I won't be going as anything this year because I don't think anyone I know is planning to have a party.

Boo!

lewes for guido's, dude.
the UK is great on the fifth, but lewes feels balls-out dangerous.

i don't have a costume idea yet.
i doubt i will, i always forget about the 'ween in that vital week or two before the end of the month and end up cobbling together some shite out of stuff i already have.

i dont have very much.

Lewes does doesn't it. People running down the road with wheelbarrows full of red hot coal will do that.

Come to think of it, despite the link to protestantism, there is a really pagan vibe to the whole thing, and people dress up, so I think it has a lot in common with Halloween.

I suppose I will have to learn to wear a wig as I am not blonde like Billie Piper.

I have a tall lanky friend who I'm going to bribe into being the Tenth Doctor at my party tonight. (Non-Halloween-related party.) I figure after a few drinks, it'll be easy to talk him into it.

T'would be good to go as a pair if you plan on going as Rose, I reckon.

You know, I've been to some wicked Halloween parties over the years. I seem to remember Gumbitch had one once where they'd written demonic summonings all over the toilet walls. Interestingly the loo chose that evening to back-up and blast shit all over their house.

There's a message in there.

I've got it into my heed, somehow, that I'll go as BOY FRANKENSTEIN. Big, fuck off (plastic) sword not optional. May do something crossdressy/slashy/slashdressy with the girlfriend. You know, Potter and Blondie (the other gay one who's the evil house captain? Him)

the sectarianism is part of the magic, i reckon.
the throwing of fireworks at the dudes dressed as cardinals and bishops reading out proclamations makes for some of the best fun of the night, if a more than a little fucked in the head.

i have it on good authority that, although inspired by a hatred of catholics, it isnt about the sect hation anymore, but then the orangemen say that as well.

i'm conflicted by a love of fire and a dislike of hatred, i guess. the whole holiday is kinda iffy, though, isnt it?

halloween seems a lot less troublesome, but then i dont have a problem with ghouls and de'ils like some folks do.

Oh, you're right. Or else everyone will wonder why I dressed up as a blonde girl for the holiday.

On the Lewes tip, Tokso, I try and forget the history of it and focus on the sticking it to authority/lawlessness of the evening. It also feels quite bachanalian, which is good.

I'll be going to Lewes for sure. I was hoping to go to the big annual Halloween party my friends throw in Southampton but I don't know if I can, boo. The costumes are always ace, I still remember No-Face one year, terrifying.

Any suggestions as to which Rose outfit?

I thought about going as the TARDIS but then thought better of it.

I know a couple of guys that went to a party dressed as the Twin Towers*, so, you know, dressing as man made artefact is possible.

I have just the thing for you.

In terms of fiery recklessness, the Ottery St Mary barrel roll deserves at least a mention.

Boboss, it's always been pretty big in Ireland. I'm not there, but I would say that the fireworks are already beginning to be heard around Dublin. Also Hallowe'en, not the 5th, is a big bonfire night in Dublin.

I was considering reprising Groucho Marx again this year, but I also have to find a party first - is Hallowe'en celebrated in Wales?

I wonder whether bonfire night is a sort of reappropriation of Halloween. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

That bizniz in Devon sounds mental. They should team up with Lewes and make Ultimate Guy Fawkes Night.

When you're as beautiful as me, every party becomes a battle to find the one person who wants to dance and not fuck.
Curse my angelic form.

Party on the weekend, the hopefully Lewes for the 5th, though I may be dogsitting that night.

Lewes is great- it feels more like the Wicker Man than anything else, if you strip away the sectarian coverings.

Oh man. You know, I swear to god I had that idea the month after the... event, but knew I couldn't do it, it would just freak too many people, and I'd end up being in a fist fight in a big box outfit. Somewhat understandably. But I had the whole thing all thought out, and I won't even go into it here, because I will already be thought a monster for having imagined it.

That year instead I turned my head into a bird, with a nest around my neck; it worked pretty well, I gotta say.

A few friends and I are thinking of going as the work of Robbin Williams. Not only do I get to apply great whacks of fake hair to my arms, but I also get to drink myself to hell and back and tell people "it'll all be alright."

Others will include Patch Adams, the teacher fellow from Dead Poets, and Mrs Doubtfire.

Do it all properly and become increasingly unamusing as the evening goes on.

Can you bring along one of the psychopaths Robin Williams has played, like in Insomnia or Death to Smoochy, and have it strangle the Patch Adams one(and Mrs Doubtfire while they're at it)? Get Mork and Garp to wrestle.

But if someone else went as a plane. Well, I don't even think there'd need to be verbal communication for what would, would have to, happen next.

I'm having a halloween party this year, oh, yes. Here's dinner from last year's party:

Last year I went as Herne; this year I think I'm going to continue the horned-god theme and go as Pan.

Nice spread, Mirror. More effort than most put into a party.

Right. I've decided on "The Idiot's Lantern" Rose and my mate Will--who didn't need as much persuading as I had thought and who has never seen a single episode of the Doctor--is going as Tennant.

Whee!

This year for Halloween I will be turning 27.

As far as parties go, there is a friend of mine who throws an EPIC party every year. Last year I went as Elijah Snow

This year I don't know. The fiance and I also go to a party every year that is thrown by one of her medieval studies professors, and along with another couple we are going to that party as the 4 horsepeople of the apocalypse (stick horse and t-shirts with puffy paint latin explaining which one we are).

It should be a good time.

Does the poor lad know what he's in for?

I'm stuck for costume ideas. I made a pretty good Shaun (of the Dead) and John Constantine...

NOW what?
