Halfway through listening to this at the moment. And fuck me if it isn't BRILLIANT. I thought Leviathan had set the bar pretty fucking high. Then Tool came out with 10,000 Days, and I started to worry (because I do. I worry about these things) how Mastodon could possibly even compete with that. Although Tool kind of cheated by shifting the goalposts- no longer prog metal, they're now more "just prog" but prog that rocks out, and rocks out well.
Mastodon have fucking pulled it out of the bag, on the strength of the five tracks I've heard so far. Like on Leviathan, they switch between genres of metal effortlessly. Given that it took Leviathan about four or five listens before it became one of my all-time favourite albums, I reckon by the weekend I'll be absolutely head-over-heels in love with this. All signs are positive. It rocks a honey badger's ass. |
