One of the telltale signs of Bleach filler is that the writers include all those dreadful Scooby Huddle scenes that blighted Buffy so badly, in which the core five all kinda explicitly acknowledge each other as the core five and sit in a room shooting the Council of Elrond shit with precious fuck all going on besides exposition. Willow, Giles: hit the books. Xander: give us a ton of tired Chandler quips, maybe one of them will be funny. Buffy: walk round a graveyard, moan about your lot in life, maybe act a little pompous, maybe turn into someone ten years older in the fight sequence long shots.

Whereas Kubo only seems to acknowledge that Ichigo, Rukia, Ishida, Orihime and Chad are the core characters via the shrieking mouth of Keigo Asano, and usually only really writes exposition in sequences that do at least one other thing at the same time, ie: the Vaizard/Arrancar conversation to which it was extremely hard to pay adequate attention because NOT ONLY IS ISSHIN A CAPTAIN LEVEL SHINIGAMI, BUT HE AND URAHARA ARE TALKING LIKE OLD FRIENDS AND HE'S KNOWN EVERYTHING ALL ALONG!

170. You know I may be able to tolerate the filler if it continues to apparently be aware of its utter ridiculousness by way of having Ichigo actually point out the amount of hand waving that is going on in regards to plot.

Infact Ichigo was entirely made of Win this episode both in defeating Fail!Ninja by using his brain, kicking Kenyruu in the face for running off and in his general exasperation about having to be involved with Annoying-Princess-Who-Looks-Disturbingly-Like-Hitsugya at all.

Loved the fact that Rukia pwns EVERYONE by being Kuchiki. Hopefully this means Byakuya will show up at some point and out-princess the Princess. \o/

The Shinigami Golden though, WTF? Cell phone designs? Seriously? Seriously?

Nah. Anything named after Kurosaki Snr R00LS.

171: Funny and inconsequential again. Gotta love those shots of Rukia playing arcade games, Kenryuu's zanpakuto is rubbish in a pretty fun way, crap ninja are crap.

Yeah, it was more popcorn fun. Good that it keeps Rukia's familiarity and empathy with being nobility.

Weirdninja are weird and good. Odd that their weapons seem to be grafted (in this one's case literally) to their arms, rather than held. Reminds me of the work done by Mayuri or Szayezel. Makes me think they might be artificial shinigami or summat, created by their lord.

The Freewheeling Convo

Interesting also that Weirdninja #2 uses a katana at first then switches to another magic weapon and that, not only does it survive his death, Weirdninja #3 comes to collect it at the end. More evidence that these aren't usual shinigami. I reckon that they use the (somehow preserved) weapons of dead soul reapers. Or summat.

Man, this latest round of filler is certainly more interesting than any that have gone before (with the exception of the football episode). I'm really enjoying these Soul Society episodes because they're doing exactly what filler should, which is taking an unexplored corner of the Bleach universe and really putting some meat on its bones. Both of the episodes that have focused on the 3rd Division are giving us excellent studies of Kira's character, someone I had previously almost completely ignored amongst the other more immediately interesting players. Seeing him slowly isolated from his division and having all his insecurities capitalised upon is also a sufficiently nasty way of setting up a decent threat for this arc, however long it may last. Previous filler baddies just never seemed so personally invested in torturing the good guys, in hitting them where it hurts with such mean-spiritedness.

And now it seems as though we're breaking from the established pattern, with the main characters heading out elsewhere from the living world so soon into the story. Either it's an indication that the arc may be substantially shorter than suspected, or the filler writers are going to genuinely try something a bit different. Either way this is good stuff I reckon, and despite a few clumsy moments it's probably the best non-canon material we could hope for.

Recap goes here

Loved the previous episode as I have a soft spot for Kira and its nice that KT helpfully continues to validate my fanfic characterisation. *iz smug*

Here's hoping the nasty third seat gets bankai-ed into a smear by Shuuhei and/or Renji (preferably shirt-less) for being mean to poor, sweet Kira.

Hey it's filler, nothing is too unlikely.

My Sweet Baboo rules everything, as usual, the moment he turns up. Really there should be a law that Byakuya must appear at least once in all the omakes.

I loved Byakuya's horrified expression at the end there. Also, this made the whole episode worthwhile:

You can't keep Ken-chan away from a good tea party!

El Directo
13:27 / 05.06.08
Yeah, the shot of Kenpachi at the table with the girls made the whole dull, saccharine tea party affair worthwhile. Meanwhile we have an assassin who can take out a bunch of guards in a flash but runs really, really slowly to catch up with Lurichiyo, and Zaraki himself seems to be improving markedly at detecting Reiatsu.

Kenryuu and Enryuu are pretty... rubbish at everything, aren't they?

Recap goes here

I've discovered that the reCAPS are laugh-out-loud funny as opposed to merely amusing, but I need to have watched the episode first, and I need to have some alcohol taken.

I have nothing else to say, except that this episode animation was a little worse, and everyone was acting strange (shallower?). I appreciate the filler for what it is, and dislike it for what it isn't.

The Freewheeling Convo
04:39 / 06.06.08
Right, I'm a bit pissed but, after the astute observation that Ken-chan is getting better at reiatsu reading we see that Yachiru is as well. If she's actually, actually the always-on manifestation of his zanpakutou then wouldn't their mutual improvement make senses. Yes? Yes.

I can hardly bring myself to post this... but when I saw the shot of the warehouse Bert and Ernie were locked inside (the SS equivalent of a potting shed that should have taken any Shinigami about a second to break out of) and heard the muffled grunting, heaving and cries of 'Nearly there!' ... well, that's enough of my feeble imagination.

Ma'at. Bad. Influence.

This was a strange episode, wasn't it? Tea parties, killer lolis and the most unequal fight for the thinly written sake of a popular character's cameo I've ever seen. Stupidest thing: the guards all repeatedly yelling What? He disappeared! Where did he go?!? every time Ichigo used Shunpo, as though they'd never seen or heard of it before. One recurring pattern in filler that irritates me is the writers' tendency to rejig Ichigo's status vis a vis Soul Society to suit the plot: one week he's on the run from a hundred guys armed with garden rakes, the next he'll be happily hobnobbing with Ukitake and co. Shouldn't everybody know who he is by now and be able to react appropriately when he pops up?

Rail Transfer (WTF! Name change by the way) I am sorry. I was going to welcome you to the Yaoi Side but then stuff happened and I got distracted. Did I mention that I have the attention span of a goldfish?

You do realise of course that once you start seeing yaoi, it cannot be unseen. Soon you will accept Byakuya/Renji as canon just like I made everyone else I know accept Qui Gon/Obi Wan. *insert maniacal laugh here*

Anyway, I digress. Last episode was really not much cop was it? The only aspect I did like was right at the end with the Ichigo and Rukia interaction and Ichigo finally getting an inkling as to how much being a noble can suck.

Adored the omake though. Byakuya's look of horror for the win. *draws pink sparkly hearts round Byakuya*.

Click for Recap. Warning! Reading may cause undignified snickering which can be hazardous in an open plan office.

So if you had the power to write the Bleach filler storylines, what would you write?

*iz in awe* What a fabulous idea and why I have not thought of that before. I love you!

*iz luvved*

It made sense since we first met Ken-chan. Particularly that bit after he and Ichigo have sex for the first time; he remembers meeting Yachiru whilst lamenting that he doesn't know his sword's name, then flashbacks to him naming her.

We're told Kenny's sword, like Strawberry's, is 'always on' in shikai. Him having his sword's soul always manifested makes sense considering the size of his reiatsu (whether he consciously knows it's name or not).

We rarely see them apart and she often just appears from nowhere, as if she just manifested out of Kenpachi's back like some tiny Athena.

A few people have come up with this theory and have said "but she's got her own sword". However, Zangetsu can manifest his own sword when training, along with a bunch of failswords.

Kenpachi's reiastsu being strong enough to manifest a zanpakuto and then a zanpakuto for his zanpakutou is batshit insane enough to be WIN.

Plus soul society's scariest hardass's zanpakutou being a pink-haired little girl is the best thing I can think of.

I'm enjoying all the craziness of Yachiru being Kenpachi's zanpakuto very much. It's a great piece of speculation and even if it's not what's actually going on then it deserves to be.

So, 174. Two things I'm glad about; that asking Orihime and Rukia to look after the princess didn't result in a girls-smell-of-wee-and-can't-fight-for-toffee outcome; and that of all the core Karakura Scoobies Inoue was the first to hit the enemy, twice in a row no less. \m/ RöK! \m/

I wish they'd spend more time on the new captain and less on FAIL ninjas attacking the Scoobie Gang.

So far the captain seems like a nice guy but his 3rd seat is like Szayel's poorly dressed younger brother. The border patrol is part of the 2nd Division, which means he came from the 2nd Division ... could Soifon and Byakuya have been the two other captains who examined him?

I'm not sure what's more entertaining, the fact Rail Transfer could identify (and screencap) the scene I was referring to or that Nanao-chan has much the same finely tuned focus that I do. Clearly we are all irredeemable pervs.

Abs, pecs, who cares really, *stares*.

These abs... how do they make you feel?

Frustrated that I can't see more frankly!

Anyway, have some recap

Bring back Captain Tuning Fork and the shenanigans in the Third Division please. And shirtless Renji. Because. Otherwise I shall be forced to start writing my own filler episodes.
