If this has been brought up somewhere already, my apologies.

How To Do It!

Basically, it's an attempt to help bankrupt Focus on the Family... but Warren puts it better...

snip...

This week, I found a way to strike back.

Focus on the Family, the horrid anti-gay evangelical church based in Colorado Springs that wields too much power for anyone’s good, has a store on their website that will give you books, CDs, and DVDs absolutely free of charge. Usually people pay for their items by donation, raising millions of dollars to help Focus on the Family produce more hate-propaganda featuring “experts” on homosexuality who claim it’s a curable “sickness”.

I'm going to be doing it, and I hope you will as well.

Also, I'll be cross-posting this to Switchboard as it's close enough to activism for my tastes. If that's a problem, my apologies in advance.

I think we have one of these already - but there's not much discussion as yet.

Someone should move to delete the switchboard one then.

On paper this sounds like a good idea. On paper most things do. Unfortunately the 'free stuff' is mostly right-wing Christian books- 'A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality' sounds like a right laugh.

I think the point may not be that you like the stuff you receive.

The point may be that you receive it for free so they therefore send it to you for free, thereby spending their own money, therein fucking themselves over.

I dunno, quite like the sound of:
His Princess Gift Set

Have ordered Silas Marner and a few things that have been claimed for Jebus and reChristianised by their definition. Will see what happens...

I quite like the look of the DVDs that will destroy Darwins theory of evolution, yes that was 'theory' I said and not scientific fact.

Might be good to have a note of anyone who is ordering this stuff so we can watch their invincible arguments storm the temple, lab and headshop.

I can see me having problems at some point in the future as I try to explain why I have a copy of:

You Don't Have To Be Gay

Are you struggling with homosexual thoughts and desires? Can it really be true that you don't have to be gay?

On my bookshelf, it was a joke !!!111!!

I will be ordering the 3-disc set of Les Miserables and the Complete Narnia Radio Play Thingy and maybe some books to recycle.

Because Jesus Loves the Earth.

A fairly obvious statement, perhaps, but I find it incredible that these people still exist. In fact, my flatmate not so long ago told me straight up that Darwin was wrong, and that one of my friends would not definetely go to hell because she was a lesbian, but that she would have to redeem herself.

I shall be getting the Narnia CDs for my niece.

Recycling them would be doing them a favour, I'd imagine.

Exactly! They get a new life as something useful, like copier paper or whatever!

They not only exist, but their influence appears to be on the rise.

They might produce more on order though. I don't like the idea of humanity's carbon footprint increased by ordering that kind of book from right wing Christianity.

Use it as toilet paper.

Show your love for the trees and contempt for the Right-Wingers in one fell swoop.

My wife went to uni with a girl who got an A in evolutionary biology then went on to get a 1st in science and still maintained Darwin had a nice theory that was so far from the truth it was laughable. Ignorance I can understand but this is something else.

Well, it has been on the rise in the last few years, particularly, but I think it's starting to plateau, and hopefully start to drop again soon enough.

There's a definite pattern to religious fervor in the US, or at least in my experience there seems to be. Growing up in the midwest and moving to Edinburgh two months before 9/11 has given me a fairly interesting perspective on that.

Every time I've gone back to visit my family since then, it's been terrifying at first. The flag-waving obsession has waned in favour of a cross-waving fetish, which IS worrying.

I only use Richard from Big Brother. Unless there's some toilet paper handy.

Gingerbop, do you listen to the CDs, before you give them your niece? These people think, there´s all kinds of evil stuff in Harry Potter, LOTR, etc. So they may have put some demagogic stuff on those CDs ("Why does the white witch hate us so much, Aslan?" "Because she hates our freedom. And she doesn´t like boys, Peter."

Maybe there are subliminal messages edited in by backwards recording?
