Name Problem

Strange Machine Vs The Virus with Shoes

When trying to change my display name I was unable to type in the name I wanted to in full. Having noticed that some members have very long names, longer than the name I wanted to use, I decided to copy the longest name I could see and paste it into the display name box. Unfortunately I accidentally pressed enter which activated the update process, now my display name is a truncated form of someone else’s.

Could anybody help me in changing my name sooner than 28 days and maybe tell me how to get a name longer than that which will fit in the display name box?

Thanks
F.

The people who have very long names (mainly Mister Six... but there may be others) had them before the length restriction came in. The rest of us just have to be more creative. And careful.

PM Tom Coates, Finsbury. He should be able to revert it back for you.

Although I was one of those who supported limiting the length of user names a long while back I'm now wondering exactly why we did it.

Was it not something to do with the way that long names result in posts taking up a disproportionately large amount of screen space? Like happens now when you've got the (prev) bit included, only worse?

Quarter Circle & Kickback is showing on my screen as a string of numers and hashes, when it should be ▼◣◄K

That's because the names are shown as anchor links, so HTML parsers can't deal with them and renders them literally. There's no easy way round it. Sorry.
