Haus are you Steptoe off the telly by any chance?!;-)

Was in a pub on Sunday watching England v Equador and it was great. At one point a man shouted "Come on Lambard you C@~#" and was asked to "shut up or leave". Not what i expected at all. Very pleasant!

Pato, you don't have to apply yourself to flattering if flat-footed plagiarism of the other El Dude Brothers' gags (in this case, the comparison of Flyboy to Victor Meldrew) to prove your dedication. Just go over and see them. Play some XBox. I know it's not like it was when you were living in halls, but they're still your friends. Best call ahead, mind.

Back to the football... I'm curious, incidentally, about whether this applies to other sports. For example, Wimbledon has just started, and I remember as a young'un being infuriated by the way the television was hijacked by Wimbledon - fewer TV channels back then, obviously. It seemed inexplicable that so much attention was devoted to the tournament, especially given the apparently insane suspension of disbelief about the chances of the English (or British, in this case) contingent.

Mind you, it does seem that Wimbledon is currently being obscured rather by the World Cup. Still, not long to go now. .. England will probably be out in the next round, which should calm things down, and the whole tournament will be over fairly shortly.

Wow you are funny, I take it all back. that was an absolute corker. Top marks!

You see you can do it when you try.

Bravo!

Actually, I was going to ask for that to be modded out, because thirtysomething estrangement from old chums is no laughing matter, but that might be a bit hard to do now. By giving you attention, I'm just reinforcing your mechanisms for seeking it, and I feel bad about that, because while it might be diverting, it may have consequences which might be upsetting for you and for other people. I apologise, and I will try to do better in future.

No need to apologise & thanks for the attention. Don't feel bad, your very sweet.

Back to football?

i was in meetings thursday with a couple of volk - lovely of course, as i think all the germans I've ever met have been. there was one thing though - we were discussing usng fuzzy logic systems to clean-up a database (mm - snooze), but the chap was very keen to stress that this was just a stop-gap, a short-term fix, if you will, for the ongoing database issues. in a few weeks, he stated, we will be finished with this near-term process, and will move on, inevitably, to 'the final solution' of our database woes. he said it about eight or nine times across the course of the day. i had to poke myself in the throat with a biro to hold back the snorts, guffaws, howls, screams etc.

so anyway, there i was yesterday, drinking beer, hating football - and yet for a second or two there, i really really just thought, power of football can be so immense sometimes, posh spice just seemed like a nice lady, you know? just happy for hubby i guess (i swear i could hear her hitting all the bum notes in the national anthem though. perhaps for these occasions she could just pout her way through the anthem instead, much as if it were a rendition of 'mama' or 'stop right now thankyou very much').

i reckon that julian lennon's probably my favourite at the moment though, he seems to really want to have a nice old kickabout. same with that rooney baby-man, weird looking bastard looks damn fine with a football at his feet.

I hid out as far away as I could yesterday to avoid the football, and I almost succeeded. Probably was a mistake to try and avoid football in Essex.

Anyway, I had great fun today asking "Oh, did England play over the weekend?" to my colleagues going on about it. Because I'm American they're never *quite* sure if I'm telling the truth or not. Tee hee hee!

Because of the bastard football, Lost was on nearly an hour late last night, so my attempt at recording it was ruined. Then someone in work told me what I missed and now I hate football so much more.
Fuck you football, die!

Coming back from a crippling injury, can John Locke cross it into the hatch? Can he? Not if Nigeria goalkeeper Eko has anything to say about it!

My encounters with the wm phenomenon this afternoon:

Walking along the Fußgängerzone, I saw a little dog (something like a beagle), and his small tail had a big red stain. I at first thought, it was dry blood (poor dog!), but then noticed, it was only dyed red and the tip of the tail was dyed yellow, while the root of the otherwise usually white tail was black. SO the owner had dyed the flag on his dog´s tail, so it could join him with the flag wagging.

Later on, a black man came towards me and told me "Ghana is playing today!", and I replied, "That´s good!". Just an hour before I had told someone of Stoatie being approached by strangers on the street who vented short football lore in his direction and how that has never happened to me.

adebisi's stuck on some gurt 'desert' island you know - not much chance of him giving two goals for ghana really.

anyway - saturday then, bloody hell we're at the quarters already and we've been playing shit for the main. here's where they earn their paychecks then, eh? getting quite excited aout the prospect really. for some reason i suspect lamppard will open the scoring with a penalty, but that's probably just the madness talking. can't wait!

disclaimer: hate football

Is it not just ever so slightly possible that there is one person in the whole continent of Africa who doesn't like football? You know, there might even be a Brazilian who doesn't!

You know, those who want to enjoy this thread as originally purposed, it occurs to me, have the option of putting Sauron, Gumbitch and Pato Banton on ignore. It's easier than getting Boboss and Runce to play baseball with them, and it will calm the thread down a lot. Add Flyboy, Falconer and myself to taste.

You see, Boboss and Runce would have enjoyed that reference to poo back in the day. I wish they came over more often. I don't understand why they had to move out of halls. Something about getting a degree or a girlfriend or something gay like that. We were having a bloody good time, too. TOO GOOD TO STUDY HA HA EH? It's just crazy, man.

Come on Haus you can be more creative than that can't you? What's all this Boboss & Runce business all about? I havn't had the pleasure of meeting them IRL not being for Brighton as you seem to think I am.

I take it the answer is no anyway.

It's a conceit, dear boy. Your conceit is that you pretend to hate football while talking about it at uninformed length, because you're a mesoamerican pre-Colombian trickster spirit. 11! 23! Fnord!

My conceit, in admiring response, is that you are seeking the attention and companionship of those who used to perform such jolly japes rather more skilfully in years gone by. This conceit has extended to the idea that yoou, Gumbitch and Sauron are still living in communal student housing, despite having received a disappointing degree in Business Studies apiece, living in squalour because none of you know how to clean and a long-suffering but long-gone flatmate was the only one who knew how to work the washing machine, playing soggy biscuit and wondering what happened to the others with whom you had such jolly fun you forget how many years ago. Rag week? ASK A GIIRLY FOR A SHAG WEEK, more like. It's just a funny, funny conceit, for fun.

Haus, when have Runce and Boboss ever been skillful?

They were rubbish over Preston Park.

Runce was always last pick.
