This is really an excuse to post this Brilliant Dragon Backpack someone pointed me to on LJ.

But to widen it out what do you carry at the moment? I've always been very utilitarian, only asked for a new bag last christmas because my old blue one which I've had for about 10 years was falling apart.

But I have always secretly yearned for something space age like this to go with my space aged laptop...which I also can't afford. *sigh* But anyway a man can dream can't he?

That dragon backpack is awfully adorable, what with how he hugs your back, rests his head on your shoulder, and keeps your mobile phone in his mouth. Awww.

Mostly, I carry this bag, only more matt grey.

Otherwise a Crumpler bag, or a pannier with a strap.

I do have a little red handbag - but nothing fits, so it gets left behind.

My current everyday bag is this Fiorucci canvas bag from Target (mine is fuschia) -

Last summer I had a pinstriped canvas tote, and for nights out I have either a kelly green pleather or a light blue cotton bag... all from Target. I love their bags, I drool over them and usually have to run by the handbag section to stop myself from buying one. I know, Target... but the bags are cheap (not a one over $15) and super cute - I'm always getting compliments on mine.

I've been sporting this for about a year.

They sell it in the girl's section, and I got it off one of my girl friends, point being it's made smaller than a normal guy's backpack which I like. A lot sleeker, with small pouch for cell phone on front strap. It was great as a messenger style bag when I had my BMX, and still works well to keep stuff while riding the bus.

Used to be cool to people in Virginia, but mostly gets "Haha chuckle man purse" comments here in Florida.

I just bought a holdall to bridge the gap in my luggage between small day-sack and big arse backpacker's special.
On a day to day basis I go for a satchel type affair to carry my glasses, moleskin, pens, batteries and other assorted crap. It's not ideal as it doesn't quite have enough individual pockets for all those little things.
I also have a smallish Salomon rucksack which I use when I'm actually carrying anything of any substance or going down the supermarket.
Luggage always appeals to the slightly geeky side of mine that's obsessed with functionality and pockets, the more the better (as an aside I've always wanted one of those phtographer's vests with all the pockets, but reckon I'd probably look like a dick if I wore one).

Too small for a laptop — I still use a traditional backpack when I have to lug that around — but otherwise great. Got one almost just like it, just a little smaller and sleeker. Very handy. Never got the impression that it's a typical girl thing though; over here I see lots of male students walking around with them as well.

Boy, I'm obsessed with bags. This is my main bag.... I might have to get a new one, because I ripped out all the velcro holding some of the pouches closed --I don't like opening things, like I prefer cups to jars with lids on my desk. But now the back pocket gaps open, I'm sure that's why the velcro was there in the first place.

Ah luggage...

I've got one of these at the moment...it doesn't look quite as action man in the fabric as it does in the photo, which is nice.

Totally waterproof, lots of pockets, handy straps, neat little back system which means you can cycle with it without getting sweaty, and a really handy netting panel on the main bit, so you can stuff a jacket or a bike helmet in there without it eating space in the bag. It seems tiny, but swallows loads, and you can cinch it up tight if you're not carrying much. Got it for £30 in a sale as well.

Not that smart though, might have to grab one of those Persephone linked to above for interviews and stuff.

Hey phyrephox, you should join the U.S.Army. I spent a disasterous short stint there, and one of the coolest things was the outfits. Like this LBV load bearing vest. Look at all those lovely pouches and stuff!

I'd feel like a dick, and probably be shot on site by Florida Police Department if I wore one these days, but man those were cool. Feel like Batman with all those pouches.

I am watching this thread with great interest as I happen to be in the market for a bag. I'm after something that will accommodate my 12" iBook (in its little protective squidgy cover) a book, notebook, bike lock, etc. It would need at least one pocket (for ease of access to keys, wallet, etc particularly while cycling), would need to be comfortable for cycling with and should go well with black. I very much like the bags featured by Persephone and Jack Denfield above, but they both appear to originate in the US, where I am not - so add to the criteria 'would have to be in London'.

I very much like the look of this one:

BUT (and I know this is sad) I don't want to buy a bag off the internet because I want to pick it up and feel and see it in 3D and stuff.

At present I have a Quiksilver one strap over the shoulder bag which is very good and I like it, but it is the wrong shape for iBook accommodation (it's triangular).

Anyone bought a cool bag in London and wouldn't mind me having one like it?

I carry this, a little small for a laptop, but i dont have one. Holds a notebook, small energy drink can, sandwich, and pens pretty well though. I have had people ask me about my purse before (cant tell in the pick but it is rather purse like, one long shoulder strap) which could be seen as a drawback, but I see it as good, at least all the skater punks wont be biting on my style anytime soon.

When I have too much stuff to fit in my pockets but not enough to justify a backpack, I carry said stuff around in my trusty ripstop Yak-Pak. Apparently the sort I have is no longer made, but it's pretty close in style to this one. (No zipper on the front, though.)

It won't carry a laptop, but that's not exactly a concern for me since mine hasn't worked for years anyway. It does manage a number of small books and notebooks, pencils, various consumer electronics, and a water bottle. Good for days out bicycling or overnight trips to a friend's house.

I'm currently using a Crumpler Blunderbuss, which doesn't seem to be listed on their site at the moment. Or if it is, my web-fu is shit. At any rate, it's a mid-sized bag - not one of their photographic behemoths - and it fits a couple of novels and a bunch of CDs in it, which is pretty much all I need. I'd go something smaller in a flash - pending upgrade to the MP3 player generation - if I could, as I hate carrying crap around, but seem to be unable not to.

I can't find my WW2 gasmask holder bag I got at Camden markets, and this is upsetting me somewhat. Hrm.

I got a new Bailey Works messenger bag that I've customized.

My black one I had for many many years and decided it was getting a bit thrashed from daily hard use. I carry my laptop in it. I have carried 2 gallons of paint in my old one, used it riding my motorcycle through torrential downpours for years. I figure I should be able to live out of one with no other luggage. I love me my Bailey bag!

I was looking at the super pro but I figure the special straps would confuse me and I'd get trapped.

oh and I keep my laptop in a sock made of fake fur.

i just recently picked up a chrome metropolis in grey/black. when it arrived via ups, i realized just how big 26" is. somehow, i wasn't envisioning it with my tape measure.

but, no worries. i'm 6'4" or so and the bag, while hugging my entire back, is actually very comfortable and works well on my somewhat large frame. i've already had a hardcore cyclist offer a rude comment, but i don't mind.

it really is an excellent bag. rather costly, but i really needed something that was relatively weatherproof. i've gone on a couple test trips to the hardware store and grocery store and it holds heavy loads much better than any backpack i've had.

it's got three main pockets, a zippered pocket, a card pocket, two spots for pens and the like and a super hidden pocket in the side seam where i just keep a couple wrenches. all i need now is a better padded shuttle for thee olde ibook.

I recently bought a black version of this.

It's brilliant, has about 20 pockets, is nice and compact and becasue the main compartment opens in the way it does, is easy to fit tons of things in.

I am currently carrying a lime green and black rucksack which I have decorated myself using blue and silver spraypaints, a stencil and some marker pens.

I wouldn't say I have a great deal of affection for it, but it serves a purpose and at least it's unique looking.
