I can't think of a more pointless or annoying way to have spent my evening.

You haven't been to the Barbannoy thread lately, I assume.

Second printing just came in for an anthology with a nice big twenty pages given over to yours truly and FUCK! they changed the last line in a way that robs it of vitality, integrity, and much connection to the previous twenty pages of story. But, still, y'know, it's a good publication for me, so I can't beat my head against a wall Eva Unit 00 style. I just... Waaah! I am going to be unrepentantly whiny about this.

Even worse. They changed it, sent me the proof copy, I asked them to change it back, was told it was fixed - and on the first printing it was - and only now got my copies for the second printing and found it back to the ineffective incorrect version. I'm sure it was an innocent mistake, but still.

Good gravy. Both at unwanted editorialising and at Megs and I coming here to make exactly the same joke.

I live rurally, and it's nice and all, but not without it's own problems. We've got spring water, which is also nice in a way, but really... not sometimes. I make jokes that the water tastes so good because of the salamander shit. Which, I realize, is not that funny. I was running the water just now, and suddenly the flow cut down to a trickle. I thought the pump was failing or something, but I tried the bathtub and water blasted out. So I took the screen off of the faucet in the kitchen and what did I see plastered across the screen but the lovely mottled skin of some part of a salamander covering 3/4 of it.

I don't think there's a way to get this system really pristine without spending thousands of dollars I don't have. Drilling a well is expensive, and building a whole new cistern might not even solve the problem. And honestly, I don't want to destroy the habitat. But for fuck's sake.

Tsuga,

As nasty as the thought of "drinking salamander skin" is, I'm sure it won't actually hurt you. As a matter of fact, it's probably packed with protein! Which seems a small price to pay for lovely spring water.

I've spent a lot of time in the more arid reagions of Australia. Under about a quarter of the continent lies the "Great Artesian Basin", so you can literally sink a well and pull up water from underground. Except that it's quite salty or "hard". Not so salty that you can't drink or irrigate with it, but it does taste rather.... shit... and you can't work a lather up when bathing..... Not to mention what it does for salination, aridity and desertification.... but I digress.

Again.

Annoyance with myself. In the cold light of day, perhaps spending twenty quid buying a plush Mudkip toy just because I was bored at work wasn't the best idea when I'm already fairly skint.

Just a bit peeved that it's been a month since the tornado and no word from my former landlady about the issue of my rental deposit/pro-rated rent, not to mention the amount she owes for one of the trees on her property falling on my car.

Let's say that the possibility of eating a $1100 is making my tummy ache.

Got a call from my landlord last night- they're renovating the building and I have two months to leave. Apart from the fact that I absolutely HATE MOVING HOUSE, I now have to find somewhere that will let me have a dog.

I kind of suspected they might be (there've been builders in upstairs for a while) but didn't know for definite.

Good luck with househunting Stoats! And I hope wherever you settle rapidly starts to feel like home.

P.S. You sound understandably stressed over this? I hear there's a NGO who give free stress tests, and that they have offices in the tottenham court road area...?

Hmm, if we can bring those fuckers down in the next eight weeks then that awesome building in Blackfriars'll be vacant...

Cheers everyone. I'm on my week off at the moment, and I've resolved not to worry about it until Monday when I go back to work. I'm fucking enjoying this week (saw Current 93 on Monday, and Boris tonight) so I'm not gonna let anything fuck it up for me.

This is very annoying news, Stoatie. But hey, just do what we do - lie. We've got a no pets contract and a hell-puppy. Try to find a suitable property that's a bit knocked around, check with the agent/landlord how often they intend to inspect (we've not see our lot in the six months we've been here) and hopefully you'll get away with it. Enjoy that week off - it's not even raining at the moment, dammit!

As for that tree, The Levee has learned that it was not a new tree added to Lafayette Square, but rather one that had been planted two weeks prior and dug up for the staged ceremony.

Residents busy peeing on the Bush monument said that reminded them of Bush’s Jackson Square speech during which the White House brought generators and lights to light up the square and show the president saying his administration would “do what it takes, we will stay as long as it takes to help citizens rebuild,” before leaving the square pitch black while the failed federal response continued.

I wrote almost 2000 words yesterday. It was a fairly detailed account of sadomasochistic oral sex that, goddamnit, was important to convey the emotional tone of the character.

Why is it only now that I learn that this competition for novellas excludes those containing explicit sexual description?

Maybe you can extract the 2000 words and turn it into a short story involving the same characters?

And then submit it to an errrrrrotic publication? There does seem to be loads of them on Duotrope.

I have been fired. And they are trying to get me to sign a bit of paper saying that I quit, therefore denying myself some compensation that I am entitled to (I think. Not an expert on Spanish employment law. But I may be by the end of the week) and also making it harder/impossible to claim benefits.

The good thing is that I wanted to leave soon anyway and the client that I was working for has offered me a job straight away (but for less money. bum). So a week of arguing and changes and lots of other stuff.

It's not so bad, which is why I chose this thread. My forehead is creased from frowning. I am 90% going to take the new job, which will be fine. I talked to my current boss today and he says that he is not actually firing me, but that there is no more work for me at the moment. So if I do not leave voluntarily, he will find stuff for me to do that may be a bit crap. As what I do now is crap, I don't really see the difference. Anyway, he has handled it all so badly and the company itself is so badly run that I think I should take the new job even though it is less money. I've managed to persuade them to let me keep my 4 day week schedule as well. Nice.
