Post 600048, matt. Have a read. It's quite short, and it answers your question pretty comprehensively.

I don't see what's so terrible about starting a thread about ugliness on the board, arguing back and forth a bit then leaving 4 EVAH in disgust at the ugliness/lack of repentance for same. As long as you don't then come back on the board a month or two later and pretend that nothing happened and expect everyone else to pretend that nothing happened ohhh right.

Kinda thing. From Sixy, elsewhere:

Part of the problem for me is that I share no real empathy with the Doctor and Rose. They just come off as bulletproof and very full of themselves.

No empathy at all.

I'd rather not have this whole delayed-adolescent unspooling happening again and again, which is what will happen if Sixy is allowed to assume that you can be as aggressive, rude and dishonest as you like and then just wander back a bit later. This works with isolated communities of socially inept people because they ultimately have nobody else to hang out with. It is not a good paradigm for living in the world, however. So, by making that clear, we're trying to help Sixy.

Okay, for the benefit of someone who missed most of this, what did 6 actually do?

Most recently, demanded to be banned from the board.

Well yes.

Is it possible for us to perhaps see Mr Six's temporary step back from the board as time out, and assume until such times as he shows otherwise, that the time out has indeed helped him to calm down and he is now willing to play properly and not run away with the ball?

You mean, should we let him insult and harrass people, storm off and then all behave as if nothing has happened when he comes back to start the cycle again?

Well, we can, but in doing so we probably have to accept that we're going to treat him from now one as basically incapable of independent thought - that is, confirm his opinion of himself as having a dumb, animalistic nature, and one that we indulge out of pity - because we sincerely believe that there is no chance that he will be able to become responsible for his actions. I'm not sure that that will help him.

I'm not sure that we need this thread to be resurrected unless Six has specifically done something that relates to the subject that this thread revolves around or he does something that is questionable and could potentially result in banning. If you wanted to remind him, personally, of past behaviour then there is a pm system that works quite adequately. If you wanted to remind us then it may be worth directing your speech to us rather than going on about Sixy.

If you want to chart a poster's behaviour because you're suspicious of them then I suggest you save a text file with links on your desktop and when there's reason too you can pop those links in Policy. This method of pre-empting isn't working for me and I think it's stuffing up the forum with a fight that happened three months ago and isn't currently current.

Well, Anna, the subject of this thread is, among other things, "Why is the board so ugly"? Which, it seems to me, might be because we're not ready to take the time to try to help members to become more mature, accountable, socially adapted people. Another subject of this thread was apparently "an attempt to end hostilities between myself (Mister Six) and Haus without wasting anyone's time." As far as I'm concerned, Mister Six went quite a long way beyond the pale in his hostilities leading up to his demand to be banned - I seem to recall a shit sandwich popping up in his bubbly little grey matter - and it was only his disappearance that stopped his hostilty and my desire to help him from continuing.

So, two out of three ain't bad. This thread was never so much a discussion of badgering as an example of same, so possibly three for three in spirit. If the conclusion is that Barbelith doesn't want to help its members, even when they are in psychic agony at their wretched, animalistic and open-anused state, then we ought to establish that as a precedent.

Surely this isn't pre-empting at all - it was hardly a long time ago that Mister Six was being a dick. And this enigmatic comment could be taken to imply he hasn't changed his views since the last time he posted to this thread. Since I don't want to talk about you as if you weren't here, Mister Six, what's your current opinion on "the lot of us"?

Hey guys, I know my initial post that started all this wasn't very cool and I have apologized in the thread where it was placed and I'll do so again here.

I'm sorry for referring to a theater of people as animals and open anuses. I also apologize for vexing anyone here as I had with the notion of elitism. It doesn't help and I don't view myself as above those others who were there, it was a statement borne out of my frustration and inability to change and help the society I live in and my place in it.

I know that after my post things just careened into a whole huge argument that the more I explained myself and answered several different posts at once some of which called for me to explain my philosophy and others asking me take a break... the more it helped keep this negative thread alive in some ways.

It was frustrating for me and for many of us, and I want to make amends and move beyond it.

I took beyond the amount of time asked for as a break and arrived to find that the thread was not only ancient history but also had gone on for quite some time without me and I could see nothing that I could add in any way. In fact my posting here could easily just re-open the can of worms that I don't see any point of re-opening.

I've been posting in a civil fashion elsewhere and continuing to contribute to the board to further conversation so... that's my bit.

After all, we are here to share our enthusiasm & passion for things that we consider fun, interesting, stimulating, etc., whether it be magic(k), music, Batman, current events/politics, life, whatever. A place to share and exchange ideas about things we care about, on whatever topic, is what Barbelith (and really, any message board) is. It's always more fun when no one's feelings get hurt and everyone is considerate & respectful to one another.

Not trying to sound cheesy, but it's true. [end sappy inspirational music in the background]

Anna, I think that your above statement represents, graphically, everything what is wrong with barbelith.

But I don't really like to get into arguments, y'know, so I'd thank you not to respond to my in many ways wild and unreasonable comment.
