In the introduction to a 130-year old edition of the Walter Scott novel "The Black Dwarf", the fictional 'author' Jebediah Clieshbotham mentions the basis of the Black Dwarf myth - a misanthropic, deformed character who lives on the hillside, who is known as "Crooked David" or, or ... "Bow'd Davie".
