I realise I have been gratitously sketchy about this whole thing for the last... ever, but I'm leaking brane fluid by the bucket at the moment and I don't want to go in anywhere that might get corroded or stuck. I'll have a bit of a go when more compos. if that's okay?

Haus, I can do some checking if you need more people. I totally dropped the ball earlier in the year... I've got a bit of time to pick it back up now.

I've looked through and amended one name I had forgotten to fail.

OK! Launch tube one has gone, with a load of approvals.

As far as I'm concerned, btw, the yahoogroup is now being closed down - Could somebody forward the names of the final people being picked out of there to Tom as and when they are approved, if there are any left?

The process going forward, at least for now - anyone who wants to help, PM me with an email address. I recommend an anonymous one, like Barbelith_checker1@gmail.com. Ask me for an invite if you need a gmail account. I'll forward applicants from the barbelith.apply email account. When you've chedcked them, send me back a list of names - pass/fail.Keep any emails exchanged for an audit trail.

Word of warning. This will not weed out all trolls. It will weed out spammers and some sock puppets, and some trolls. It's a move towards accessibility over security, albeit a fairly small one. If I had unlimited time, I think I could guarantee an entirely or almost entirely troll-free intake. As it is, I can't. Some will be malicious trolls, some will just be out of their depth or too damn discordian for us.

Sorry - amendment. Right now, for the sake of speed of processing, I'm prioritising support from people who have been involved in the applications process previously, or are familiar with the process. I'll add people when the flow demands...

I've just been through the whole database checking for my unprocessed applications and as I did I noted that there are still applications pending from Lurid, Vincennes, Smoothly, Benny the Ball, Iconoplast, Bryan, Nina, one for Mordant, Cube, Sparky, Shrug and Mr Disco.

Some of them are ancient so I don't know what to suggest about them.

West Baltimore Hausing Project

Applications pending in the sense of people they had recommended, or people they had taken on but then not checked?

Smoothly
11:26 / 31.10.06
In my case there will be people I’d taken, but who never replied to emails I sent.

Sorry, I’m a bit of a Barbelith part-timer at the moment. But this evening I’ll go through my applicants and fail the non-correspondents.

They're people taken but never finished.

I apologize for my inactivity lately; school has been quite demanding as of late.

I looked through the applications I okay'ed and think they're still quite suitable for invitations.

Could you PM me those email addresses, Bryan?

On those remaining in the yahoogroup - if someone has been unambiguously passed the first time around, I think we can send them straight on. What sort of numbers are we looking at?

Disco is My Class War

OK - if there are any non-passed people in the yahoogroup who you gave a first pass to and are confident are kosher, could you PM me with their email addresses? I'll double-check, but would like your input, and I need to cross-refer them with the google account.

Also, now that the yahoogroup is being run down, I think we need to start removing people's access. Vincennes, could you PM me about this?

Any more clues than that?!

If you give us a bit more info we can look for them in the database but I would think if they are still waiting they may not have met the criteria. Can you PM me the info you have, like name, email, date applied and then I can check for you?

Haus, I'm sorry -I only just saw your post. PM on the way.

I came to this thread to say thank you very much to everyone who's helping with the checking; I completely dropped the ball with getting things organised, was feeling bad about it and really appreciate it. Cheers, all!

A very cool, sexy and intelligent person i know from another board has just PMed me there to ask if i could ask why hir application to Barbelith was ("apparently") rejected. Ze asked me to PM a mod but i'm not sure which one would be most appropriate...

I think the problem may have been hir email address? Not sure tho, cos ze is a longstanding and fairly prolific poster on the other board, which is a large and reasonably well known one, and which i therefore thought would be sufficient evidence of non-fakeness (given that i got in on the basis of a single, 3 year old Indymedia posting)...

Actually, as I recall, it was that and a sensible, well-worded application which got the benefit of the doubt because you explained your situation convincingly. And a well-established email address linked to that article which, even if it was free, required some sort of membership of another group to get.

Anyway, it's hard to say. I don't think we reject many people at all, we may just not have accepted them - there are also still quite a few people we need to get back to.

Hydra vs Leviathan
02:15 / 08.11.06
yeah, ze didn't make it quite clear that ze had been "actively" rejected, rather than just not (yet) accepted. Ze could just have seen the latest "batch" of accepted applicants and presumed that hirself not being among them = being rejected...

I was about to dive into the pile again, when I noticed we don't seem to have a "Sent" flag on there yet, so if we pass anyone, how do we know who the new batch are for the next Tom email?

Er, Bump, because Llama has just alerted me to someone marked passed who doesn't seem to have has hir invitation yet. What's the best way to do this? I think whoever does the send needs to mark them, but just for now, would it be a good idea to re-send all those marked passed and mark them "sent". I know that would be a bit extra work for you, Tom, but I think it would be a nightmare to wade through all those Google mails for Haus or whoever did the last "send".
Anyone got any better ideas?
Anyway, I'm off to weed out some spam. Won't do anything else yet.

West Baltimore Hausing Project
11:22 / 05.12.06
Short version - before I disappeared for a fortnight, I was updating Tom with the people I and the other reviewers were passing every week - I'll catch up with the weekly (now post-fortnight) update shortly. As such, whether or not there is an issue with Llama's contact depends largely on when ze was passed. Anyone tagged as passed will be sent. It's easiest, probably, to cross-check any issues there against the email addresses in the Barbelith system, but we could have a passed, sent tag if it made life easier.

Your access to the gmail database is unusual, cube. I've been leaving you to your own devices, largely - have you been sending your passed people to Tom?

I'm not sure which thread to bump to ask this in....

Oh great and diligent Barbe Application Folk!

I honor your efforts, the weeding of trolls, the reviewing of asshats, to search out the actual human beings of verifiable realness,

For you I give a great wealth of chocolate cake and greater wealth of lolcats. For your time and efforts are vast and priceless.

The Barbe Temple Journal thingy seems to have stirred up some new applicants to the board. What's the current approval ETA I should tell them? A month of backlog or so?

Much luvs to you and yours!

Varies wildly, to be honest. I just passed a bunch of people, including a number who mentioned your name, XK. Incidentally, at the moment there aren't Barbe-applications people. As far as I know, there's basically just me - I mean, possibly Cube, but I haven't seen him arond Barbelith for a while.

Haus, I thank you.

(it's the biggest piece of chocolate I could find. 50000 chocolate bars I believe)

Do you need help with that or are you ok? (the apps not the chocolate)

How can you even look at that picture and not suggest oh so slightly that he might need some assistance?

I just hope all the newcomers arriving from/for the Temple journal don't turn sour. The trolls are sneaking in through the Temple concern could stand to be considerably cooled down and put away.

And, Haus, if you don't mind me asking, is there a standardized approval/rejection message that you have the honor of sending out, or is there an electronic function to do it automatically? I'm terribly curious and don't want to resort to faking an application to find out what either one reads like.

I originally withdrw from the apps process due to meltyhead, but I think I might be unmelted enough ATM to have another shot (at least temporarily). However the apps process seems to have mutated since I was involved so I'm not sure what to do.

You're a moderator, DD. That is supposed to suggest concern for and interest in the maintenance of Barbelith. Attempting to secure multiple suits is what trolls do, it is currently a banning offence, and I could really do without you, a moderator, threatening to try to game the system if your whims are not met, even in jest.

West Baltimore Hausing Project

That having been said:

The invitation email comes from Tom, not from the applications process. At last count, it told the applicant how to register their suit, and welcomed them aboard. And, I think, asked them to read the FAQ.

There is no rejection email. People who are able to prove their existence with a reasonable degree of conviction are passed on to Tom to be given the keys to the kingdom. Those who do not are free to provide further and better particulars at any point in the future. So, there's no such thing as rejection, per se, only not having been accepted yet.

Hope this helps.
