Right now I am subtitling the Queen's Xmas message. I can't believe she pre-tapes these! I feel like I am three days ahead of everyone else.

You're a subtitler, Jackie? Is that your actual job title? Because that's oddly awesome.

20:35 / 22.12.07
The job title is captioner, but yeah. The actual work is okay, but the hours and pay are terrible.

Petty annoyance: nature documentaries where they pause meaningfully after every clause, making it impossible to work out if they've finished a sentence or not until you hear the next bit.

So here I sit, awaiting that darn centrifuge's pleasure. I really ought to be in a good mood as we've finally gotten back into production after six months of head/wall interfacing.

But, naturally, being a lab supervisor means having to go that extra mile, juggle a billion different problems all at once, and every now and then stay horribly late.

(I normally get out of here at 16.30, it's horribly late if I say it is. Okay?)

I've got another hour and a half at least to look forward to.

Think of the overtime. Think of the overtime.

No I won't. What I will think about instead is getting home in time to switch my brain off and watch The Sarah Conner Chronicles.

Ah Terminators, they ease my pain.

Commiserations evil scientist, but spare a thought for those of us who have three hours of tissue culture still to go before dinner...

Sitting in union headquarters, writing correspondence to local politicians, admonishing them for the lock-out and encouraging them to reevaluate the situation. It's been good, except now we're all listening to a local radio station where people are saying pretty nasty things about the library workers.

Nuke-- after five months of the management and the muncipalities refusing to negotiate with us and the union taking rotating job action, they voted to lock us out. We've been out for just about two weeks now, with no end in sight.

Tissue culture done! Now to research the concept of dinner and sleep...

Goodnight 'lith! I know everything's gone a bit quiet, but I love you all (all) the same!

Well well, lucky ol' me. Got in at seven this morning to kick things off. One big horrible technical problem later and I'll be lucky to get out of here by ten this evening.

But I've got cold roast chicken, and a salad. The New Scientist and there is that online Doctor Who novel about The Other that I've been meaning to read.

I stay and work because I'm a company man til the bitter end.

Will you all be upstanding for the corporate anthem?

I'm not at work, but I'm bored. Should I even be here?

As this thread appears to have turned into the "Evil Wristwatch Nuke Scientist" moans about having to work late allow me to continue.

I will be getting out of the lab tomorrow. How's that for jolly?

Are you near the coffee machine? Slug one down and think hard about your friendly neighbourhood Scientist. I need your psychic caffeine.

I am the psychic caffiene vampire.

Mwah ha haaa!

It's early. I only work today and Thursday this week -- vacationing over the weekend to come, plus my usual days off midweek -- but it's still too many days. And people keep talking to me when I just want to sit and read and not be bothered. I'm doing my nod-head-not-listen routine.

Argh, the work days before a break are truely the worst.

I sit in an empty lab awaiting the ding of my microwaved dinner. Truely I live in the world of tomorrow...TODAY.

Hmm, more coffee? Why yes I shall.

I have a sneaking suspicion that may be the case.

Okay I now have tomorrow off, but kornsarnit! It's nearly 2300. That's when the wine vendors shut up for the night.

Work is interfering with my drinking and I promised myself that would never happen.

On the bright side....

A Bryan Lee O'Malley webcomic makes me happy, which cuts through the horror of printer problems, freaks on the phone, a bad mood, lack of sleep, general despair...etc.

Join the cathartic fun of the work shift.

This time of night around here there'll be foxes and deer on the roads, I had best keep my wits about me.

It's not that I care for the lives of animals you understand but having to pay cash money when the Stallone of deers jumps in front of your car and does serious, yet invisible, damage to my car and then just bounds away into the woods is not an embuggerance I'd wish to repeat.

And the clock spit-clicks nearer to midnight.
