A little offtopica but there was a similar diversion a bit earlier in this thread, so in the abscence of a dedicated one...

There should, in the near future, be original Frank Quitely pages from both New X-Men and the legendary Flex Mentallo going up for sale here. Those in the want might be interested in scrambling together their pennies fer a piece of comics history.

I knew I've seen it and took it from somewhere. You can also find some interesting readings of the character in the "Superman" tag.

It's incredible seeing some of those 70's-80's stories, where they were going for something more down-to-earth (for instance, Clark isn't really a mask, and as Clark he doesn't have powers) serious and without those superdickery moments, where he was an incredible ass-hat prick. The plot's/narrative's demeanor in its preoccupation towards Lois, getting out of its way to fuck over Steve Lombard career-wise (without mentioning all the "wimp" feuds, cock-fights and bullyings)... Superman was even a bigger asshole than in those superdickery bits (at least there the reader was supposed to go in knowing he was being a evil dick, you'd just go for what would be the excuse this time).

And thank you for that, iamus. Absolutetly no money for it, of course, but it's great seeing those in original b&w "silenced pictures" style (and seeing how J. Grant is such a huge portion of what the series is). Wish they'd do the same with excerpts of GM's scripts.

(it was quite different the originally-intented Solaris in the P.R.O.J.E.C.T H.Q. -- some other nice & curious stuff, but can't remember now)

Thanks iamus!

Hey guys, a cursory look at the pencils for ASS#8, page 7, reveals a very disturbing clearer picture of the last panel. Yikes!

No bother.

The Flex has been rattled already, it would seem.

I actually seem to have had dreams last night about the spiritual nature of Superman, and the main focus of the dream was Morrison & Quitely's ALL-STAR SUPES.

In the dream, Superman was seen through a Buddhist or Taoist lens, and it was like the universe was saying to me that Superman is representative of 'right mind, right actions, and right consequences,' and that Superman as an idea/entity helps to raise all of our vibrations, level fo compassion, and such. I know it might sound silly to those of you who don't frequent The Temple here on Barbelith or normally contemplate such things, but I just thought it was interesting given Morrison's focus on such spiritual/magical topics.

And, as several have listed here, Superman, in pretty much all the Morrison-written issues, uses force only as a last resort and otherwise is a peaceful, compassionate Sun God. I recall Morrison saying that when he wrote JLA, he would have a problem in his own life and go into a shamanic trance or whatever and summon up the spirit of Superman to see how Superman would deal with the problem/challenge, since Superman, by his very nature, can solve any problem.

I even had a vision of an upcoming cover of All-Star Supes that said 'Raises your vibrations!' on it, right to the right of the logo, the way a cereal box might have a yellow circle that said "Now with 20% more fiber!" *lol*. I am very much aware of the inherent silliness/weirdness of that notion.

Maybe, like The Invisibles, the comic has a nice side-benefit of transmitting messages of peace and spiritual awareness in addition to simply being entertaining. Or maybe one might say I'm just thinking about these things anyway and, since I'm a comic fan, I'm merging the two in my subconscious. But hey, J.H. Williams III used to sign his messages on Barbelith with 'rise and reverberate' so I can't be the only one!

Here's to the next issue. this really is a run on the character of Superman that will be considered historic when we look back on it.

Is anyone else mildly hoping for an appearance by 'Toon Legion of Super-Heroes member Superman-X, lone clone hero of the 41st Century? Y'know, as part of the legacy? He made me think of A*S when I watching the show the other day.

Or maybe The One Millionth Clone of Superboy, with his OMAC-style mohawk.

Statistically speaking (judging from the 'lith members count) it's probably not such a surprise at all but with Papers covering the 8th and Boboss representing the 5th I'd like to join the squad as the official 6th of November guy. Now all we probably need for something magickal to happen is someone for the actual date itself.

(I'm really starting to wonder what'll come out of this!)

Heh. I'm hearing you there.

That's the comps in, by the by, so the new issue should be in the shops in a matter of days. First person to say where the name of the big yellow-suited guy comes from gets to share a giggle. My money's on Falconer.

nine is mighty fine.

althought it has been prevalent in the work all along, i think this issue did a good job of showcasing superman's benevolence. it just seemed to ring loud n' clear throughout. from grant's script. to frank q.'s illustrating of certain, "small" gestures on superman's part, the character's basic decency was at the forefront. where his TRUE strength resides.

~~and jimmy's fashion faux pas gave a giggle~~

thanks, you creators, you.

now waiting 'til february seems like a long time to go without the sun.

Superman's benevolent but that doesn't mean he isn't occasionally insecure, and I love how no matter how benevolent he is he can still be petty toward Steve Lombard.

Out of curiosity, I'm wondering if anyone else gets the vibe that Jimmy knows -- surmises -- suspects by this point that Clark and Superman are the same person? Because, during that scene at the water cooler Lois and Jimmy both give Clark a particular looking following the hairpiece thing.

Just as #6's Superman Squad adventure with Superboy mirrored those early Legion encounters, this is a twisted redux of Mon-El right down to the blood poisoning.
