Let me chip in with a very weird set of coincidences that happened to me in the summer of '96 (shit! it was 10 years ago, it only seems like last week), anyway...
I had dropped out of my first year of university, and before I went back to start again I decided to spend the summer working in the USA (I live in the UK). While I was at uni. I lived with some (pretty cool) people, but I had no idea what any of them were doing for the summer.
I landed in New York with nowhere to stay and no job to go to, but I met some other British guys who were headed to North Carolina (the Outer Banks), so I jumped on the Grayhound with them. I ended up getting a job in a hotel on the beach, living in a house just over the road. One afternoon, about a month after I got there, I walked into the front room and sat on a sofa that I didn't normally sit on, facing the window. I noticed two girls cutting through the front yard through a chink in the blinds, I could hear them talking with English accents, so I walked over to the front door to say hi. I was shocked to the point of collapse when I discovered that one of them was a girl called Nina, who I'd shared a house with at university (in Stoke-on-Trent) about 6 months before... walking through my front yard in Kill Devil Hills, NC! She told me that she'd travelled there with another girl ex-housemate, Jo, who was living about 4 miles down the road.
Towards the end of the summer I decided to do a bit of tourism, so I jumped on a train to New Orleans, some other guys I was with decided to stay in D.C., and come down to 'Nawlins' in a few days, so I arrived there on my own. I checked into a cheap hotel, and the next morning opened the door of my room, and the first person I see is a guy called Mario who had lived in my house in NC, but had left a few weeks before.
A couple of days later, I was still in New Orleans, drinking at a bar with some British and Irish guys I'd met (using my fake ID ), I was telling them about the guys I used to live with and how they should be arriving that day, when we left the bar, two of them were stood on the other side of the road.
The next day, I was heading to the bus station to travel on to Texas, then Mexico. I was waiting for a streetcar when I heard someone shouting my name... on the other side of the road were three guys who lived almost next door to me in NC.
It was a very weird summer.
