i suppose the u-men could be seen as reavers of the future then? harvesting the traits of the next step in evolution.

Everything bounces back to X-Men, somehow. I couldn't even type 'reavers' without thinking of X-Men. Which is sad. And Tito and Frankenstein should have a team-up where they chainfight Xorneto and Melmoth into submission before reeducating them. To a soundtrack that Glen Danzig hears in his dreams, but played by Spinal Tap.

So will Morrison's Bat Lovegod be the qlippoth of ASSupes? Or has Clark Kent got a hairy chest, son, and terrorist lovelies obsessing over him (and worrying about their daughter's intentions), as well?

Or has the qlippoth, the sephiroth, and indeed, the vmeme, the MeMe Complex, and the 5D squidgod been played enough and to be packed away now?

Or are all things five now seven?

One can only hope. The hard and fast stuff Grant does is usually theoryless, and ASS seems so.

I'm thinking Morrison's Authority is the next site of actual theory work. What's higher than Sheeda/Phoenix?

That Atom-1M reminds me of a minor plot point from Flex Mentallo. But anyway.

Grant tends to hit a few themes with some regularity, including that of flexibility of identity (which may show up in LoveBats: "It's when I put on the cowl that it happens"), and higher realities impacting on lower ones (which could fit in the Authority, what with their ability to access the Bleed).

I think it's a mistake to try to filter everything through one filter, however, whether it be qabalistic or vMemetic.

yeah i find the comics more enjoyable removed form the possibility of the overarching grand scheme of schemes.

i find the comics more enjoyable when I can put the thematic pieces together and discover meaning and hidden things. It's a game for me, that's all. It's kind of like looking at wallpaper and finding the repeat. I certainly don't put things like Vimanarama or JLA or We3 through a filter of anything more complex than BANG ZOOM AWWW...

JLA had most of the infodump of 'The Invisibles' prechewed for easier digestion and put in an interesting supertights framework.

Vinamarama's death stuff? The dance/not-dance sequence?

And, 'WE3' gave us the whole not-suit deal, where animals wise up past humans and a cat does catlike things. Therein lies wisdom. And dead mice. And people. And more dancing, this time, between panels.

Even avoiding any metaphysical, philosophical, or existential elements, there's still an amazing amount of technical innovation in all three of those series.

And then there's 'Seaguy', which you don't have to think about to enjoy, but if you do, if you pause and look at some of the progressions, at some of those layouts, it's very good to you.

you've certainly discovered an intriuging level of depth to the characters and stories portrayed. reading additional patterns, themes and hidden significance into the work is what makes morrison such an entertaining read but i fall shy of attributing every event or piece of dialogue to an all encompassing theoretical framework. having said that, that element is the part of Watchmen that i found the most engaging; the way the recursive patterns of moore's writing reappear in the most minute details of the comic.

Mario, in that post I was hitting again the key named "it's the universe-inside-another-universe theme and it's all about evolution and perception of reality as a game that we experience as avatars" [phew], and it's just cool and beautiful... because it is. =)
