ALL KINDS OF DEAD TREES

Shining Knight as a Teen Titan...wow. What a really great idea. Can I amend that to include Beryl Hutchinson, the Squire, as her partner? Can we pull her out of Qwewq and put her on the team?

Franky & The Bride & The Shade need their own ongoing horror book. I just reread these this morning over hot chocolate before heading off to work and WOWEE. "The Water" is more brilliant on reread. I liked the little nod to Chemo and I'm starting to really see how 7S might take place during the missing 52 weeks. "Most of the superheroes are dead," or something - and these seven must fill the void.

I loved the Uma-Bride-Kali in the 'bride of frankenstein' manner here. The wasteland that the land of salvation became. This is Miles' Cup of Blood. This is grand guinol, a really frightening horror book. Chronos is pretty scary here, but it seems to be treated as 'the necessary evil', like daddy-Melmoth.

I just thought there would be more of Frank-n-Bride imagery, of FreakHorrorDaddy and FreakHorrorMomma being worked with, since the introduction of daddy issues and Cup-Of-Blood type of "taming the bitch-horse" in #2. I expected the grand guinol would have it's table turned in mid#3, but nothing yet and don't seem like it will. Indeed a horror book for the 21st century.

The Wasteland here doesn't seem to be having any signs that will become fertile and nourishing, it will be pretty much Kali Yuga's "The horror! The horror!" and no sign of a 'promised land' (wich was pretty cool since Frankie's relationship with the Bride feels dry and arid as hell and goes nowhere but into a wretched seaward/c-word). I hope tables will turn somewhere in #4 or SS#1 in a way I would never predict.

I'm just not getting any signs of Frankie's development, obstacles, goals or challenges being dealt with here at all concerning his characterization and path. And he's reminding me a bit of u2-Johnny-Cash's "The Wanderer".

Damn, these latest GM comics are really flavoring my reading moments.

Huh what?

Chronos? I thought you were discussing a character from issue 3.

Him alright.
But it might be just me and my screwed antennas trying to relate all these things to Sheeda and their "inevitable" (="escapable" in the End?) harrowing.

As far as I can tell, this particular take on Pater Tempus is a new one. Tho I can't help but see a resemblence to this guy

jesus, I hadn't noticed how #3's cover looks like #3 from Guardian. JeezLois...

or better yet, how a lot of #3's covers look alike (jesus I'm slow...). Only Zatanna that have it's similar cover on #1.
edit: no, all covers look alike. I'm REALLY slow...

I was reading Shining Knight #1 last night... and the green giants helping to attack Camelot look a _lot_ like the new "weapon" based on Chemo.

the impression i've got is that frankie is dead static and unchanging. he's damned not insofar as the circumstances of his creation, but his unrelenting obession with baroque bloodbaths of retributuion.

the henceforth promised rampage for #4 wherein frankie will no doubt go utterly sickhouse on the sheeda as a race, is probably going to spell this out as clearly as it need be. frank is dead in body and mind. there's no room for change in him whatsoever. that's what makes him tragic.

he'll probably curbstomp the whole fucking lot of them only to find that it was exactly the wrong thing to do.

Yeah, because then J'onn will never be born.

I'm just guessing...

All threes look alike?

SK fights little Sheeda bugs
Guardian fights robo-stereotypes
Zatanna's panties disappear while conjuring her masthead
Klarion runs from Melmoth's heads
Miracle fights Baron Bedlams
Alix reclines on a piles of cartridges
Frank fights rabid wildlife

How are Zatanna, Klarion, and Bulleteer like the other three?

All issue 1s are reasonably standard full-figure shots of the protagonist. All issue 2s focus in on the face. Issue 3s appear to be 'in action' shots, typically featuring conflict of some sort. Final issues seem to depict 'final challenge' or 'final resolution' or whatever.

Ganesh
10:16 / 19.03.06
I guess Bulleteer's 'in conflict' image would be her being a bullet.

Mario
15:49 / 19.03.06
I interpret the covers like this:

1: A fairly standard pinup pose.
2: A headshot
3: The hero surrounded.
4: The hero fighting for his life.

I'm with Mario (though Zatanna's covers are indeed a bit out of wack).

I love that:

Frankenstein #3 = -1/(WE3)

loved this issue, all those 70s-inspired narration caps.

was confused by how being rescued by S.H.A.D.E made Frank more prepared to fight the infected animals [as he was basically taken out of the site only to be sent there again]. maybe I should reread it or the route that lead to the cows was more safe.

anyway, that was fun as hell, like all the mad cartoons from our childhood, with the obligatory mildly disturbing scenes. plus good major crossover-y bits thrown here and there. PLUS: I love The Bride.

I wish MISTER MIRACLE and BULLETEER were this solid.

21:29 / 21.03.06
I'd actually say that the fourth covers are of the protagonist escaping or leaving somehow ("Guardian Quits!," Mister Miracle vacating the "life trap," etc.--Bulleteer is pointing & seams to be leaning out of the picture plane. Although I'm not sure how Frankie fits into this...

Aertho
22:11 / 21.03.06
Final issues are protagonist versus thematic antagonist.

shining, honorable Ystin versus the dark queen of corruption Gloriana

Jake versus his role at the newsmagazine

Zatanna versus the higher powers, aided by language and books

Klarion versus damning authority

Shiloh versus the expectations of life - still iffy about that one...

Alix versus her image

Frank versus time?

Brilliant! I hadn't linked that last Bulleteer cover with splash in the first issue to see the cover as her reflection.

So, is that final cover a reflection of fanboy fantasies etc? (I'm thinking about the "touch" moment in Zatanna number 4).

It's Alix leaving the barrel of the gun. She's been cocked for the previous three issues and she finally goes off -- hitting Sally Sonic and the Vigilante's "destiny." Ricochet. Good call on #4 being her reflection from the end of #1.

Back on Frank - have we actually got any cover images yet? Other than the retreads from #2 with the Martian flesh-eating super-horse?

Ganesh
22:34 / 21.03.06
Isn't it another example of the Morrisonesque cocked finger shoot-you-dead gunfinger thing? From St Swithin's Day to King Mob, that particular motif crops up often. The killing off of elements of the self (possibly externalised/projected onto others a la Mrs Thatcher)?

Aertho
22:35 / 21.03.06
Being a mirror image, I'd assume you're supposed to see yourself as Bulleteer. That's breaking the fourth wall softly.

Shiloh versus the concept of restriction.

diz

Shiloh versus death, in this case death-as-inevitable-part-of-life. In the old Kirby MM stories, everyone was always going on about how MM's true foe is always death itself, whom he cheats on a regular basis.

You think that's how they bring them back to life? Bride blood?

Mario

Nah... I just thought you'd like to know. Apparently, FT turns up in "Battle For Bludhaven" too, although not necessarily as good guys. I'm holding off on spoilers until I see for myself, but the role he plays sounds rather distasteful.

Old Man Time, I'm guessing. Mario having confused this with 'Father Time'.

OMT, FT, Chronos, bowler hat black guy are all the same character, right? Is he even called so in the text of Frank #3? I missed it completely.

Mario
23:23 / 29.03.06
He's specifically named "Father Time" by the Bride
