Sorry for the downtime this evening - the server appeared to crash. Here's the e-mail from the hosts:

The server had crashed due to high load. I have already restarted it, and
everything should be running by now. If you continue to have problems with
it, please feel free to let us know

I'm a bit cross about this to be honest - I mean we're the only people using the damn thing...

Tom, FYI: I think it just happened again. For about five minutes, I got those server error messages every time I refreshed Safari, then it told me it couldn't access the Barbelith URL. Just so you know.

Is it just me or is Barbelith awfully slow tonight? I was also getting the old SQL errors this afternoon. Is there a problem with our server? Could it have anything to do with the higher than average activity over the last few days?

It's been very slow the last couple of days- this afternoon especially.

It's been pretty msquly and slow for me lately too. I presumed it was my network. Maybe not though.

No, we've had a bad attack of squirrels for the last day or two. More people logging on?

Well, there's been more board activity, I would certainly say.

ooh, now head shop is gone twilight zone... but all other boards open up ok...

alas
03:28 / 16.03.06
Ah! I thought the slowness and constant stream of error messages were the result of some Mac demon. Well, hope it is all sorted and that it doesn't cause Tom too many headaches. (Thanks, Tom)

Barbelith has been acting naughty. I got the error messages last night and the day before. Naughty messageboard. Behave.

I wonder if this is some special weirdness going on right now or whether a month or two back board activity was down and Barbelith really was dying and Nina's Feminism thread has been one of the main things responsible for a Barbe-resurgence?

Anyone having trouble today? It's terrible on my end.

It seems to have been running slow since yesterday afternoon... for me at least.

I had quite a lot of trouble earlier in the evening, but I put it down to my shitty dial-up, until I opened another tab and got an instant response from another site.

I really do wonder why this stuff happens, but to be honest, I suspect it's things out of my control that are responsible (ie. stuff happening on the server, or a particularly pernicious bot roaming around the place that pushes everything over the edge). Obviously keep me informed, and I'll do what I can about it.

Has anyone else found Barbelith has been way worse than usual for our old nemesis the SQL error messages today?

Yes, since maybe about 2pm EST.

I'll tell you what's happening, because I've figured it out finally! It's bloody spidering by Yahoo and Googlebots - happening at the same time and crippling the server! Grr! Grr! I'm going to do some tweaking to try and stop them hammering the site so hard.

Yay. I chocolate Tom Coates.

Did the server go daft again, then? I see Legba's called Λέγβά, which looks like an error message, and Bizunth posted "Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in /usr/www/users/barbelit/barbelith/includes/init.txt on line 2

Warning: mysql_selectdb(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /usr/www/users/barbelit/barbelith/includes/init.txt on line 3

Warning: mysql_query(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in /usr/www/users/barbelit/barbelith/includes/db.txt on line 29
", in the 'Games that mess with your head' thread, which may be an elaborate joke, I suppose.
