In the abstract for this thread, Stoatie asks:

Okay, so it's radio. But where does radio go?

Threads on radio, for some daft reason, don't feel right in F,TV&T. I know we've had this discussion before, and that it didn't really get us anywhere, but could we maybe change the name of the Music forum to something with a little more range?

The suggestions last time this popped up were all turned down for being a bit too quirky or not solid enough. I'm thinking that a simple Music & Radio should cover it pretty well.

Yes? No?

It would certainly make me more likely to check out the music forum more regularly...

Am I right in thinking that in music we tend to discuss actual records/mp3s? The product, if you like, rather than the media? As in Film Tv And Theatre we have historically discussed the films rather than the format or the cinema.

I can think of two ways we could work a discussion about media- or "access channels" to use a wider term- into our existing framework. Either:

a) In music, we discuss things like how to get webradio, what radio stations to listen to etc, while in F, Tv n theatre we discuss things like DVD speeds and availability of VHS and stuff- in short, each area gets its own discussion about the relative media.

or

b) We have a totally separate Fora for discussing media- if you wanna talk web radio, DAB radio, regular radio, DVDs, VHS, opening times...you go there.

Does that make sense? I'm sure there's plenty other stuff we could do...shoot away.

It all depends on the content, as well...
a discussion on the merits of various DJs would be a Music thing, whereas a lot of, say, R4's output is plays. Or books being read. Or current affairs.
It's tricky, and something that's been bugging me for a while (I don't watch TV in general, but have the radio on the whole time).

Of course, Mornington Crescent goes in the Creation, until such a day as it gets its own well-deserved forum.

I'd be up for a simple Audio versus Audio/Visual split...

It's a bit of a crap name but should Music be 'Sound'? Film TV and Theatre was called that, IIRC, because there's not a lot of interest on Barbelith for discussing theatre stuff so it wasn't thought worth having a seperate forum, plus what happens when you want to discuss something like 'Jerry Springer- The Opera'?

I'd be happy with something like Music, Radio and Audio.

Flowers> 'Sound' was one of the titles proposed in the previous thread (wish I could find it - it wasn't a thread specifically about this issue, iirc). There's not anything wrong with it, as such, but it doesn't fit in very well with the other Spectacle fora, all of which have very tightly focussed names.

I'm completely cool with adding Radio to the Music forum. I'm more naturally predisposed to say "Radio and Music", because it sounds more natural to me. But that could be because I work in a department called... "BBC Radio and Music Interactive". I think it's quite a short-termist name, but I'm kind of happy using it for the moment - switching to Video vs. Audio seems to me to be a bit clunky and hardcore at the moment. I'd be more interested in seeing how that stuff settles down - at the moment the whole media environment is a bit explosively confusing.

Yeah, thanks for that. Hopefully we might see that part of the board picking up a bit now.
