Errr...yeah. There's that.
I first saw degus when I was shopping for a rat - they looked so wise and self-contained, staring into the middle distance. Sadly, face of a sphinx, brain of an addled hamster.
They look wise and self-contained because their brains have three modes: eat, procreate, bite things. When they're not eating, procreating, or biting things they just kind of shut down.
My parents were dooped into buying one by being told that they're "nearly as smart as a rat". Ok, folks, lets be honest: rats are pretty smart...by rodent standards. So saying that something is "nearly" as smart as a rat probably just means that it has a general idea that "cats=bad".
Addled hamster is a good description. "Incontinent hamster on meth" is another good one.
...did I mention that a degu's automatic defense mechanism if picked up is to wee on you and THEN bite you? Yeah. Its not pleasent finding that out. And it really was in that order. EVERY SINGLE TIME. |
